Ilya Sutskever has raised $1 billion from Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital for his 3-month-old startup Safe Superintelligence (SSI). The valuation lands at $5 billion according to sources. SSI, which currently has 10 employees, plans to use the funds to acquire computing power and hire top talent. It will focus on building a small highly trusted team of researchers and engineers split between Palo Alto, California and Tel Aviv, Israel. According to SSI, they've raised the money to help develop safe artificial intelligence systems that far surpass human capabilities. $1B raise at a $5B valuation. For a company that is a couple of months old and doesn't seem to have a product or even a single line of code in production. Wild. In this case, everyone knows it takes hundreds of millions to train models. So investors are essentially rolling the dice on an extremely well-regarded team. And if it takes about a billion just to get off the ground, the valuation would need to be at least in the couple billion range to make it worth it for employees to work there. If you are focusing on demand generation as an early-stage startup You may be doing it wrong, and here is why 👇 As an early-stage startup, you shouldn't act like an enterprise company. You want to bring your product to people who are ready to buy. These people are already looking for solutions like yours. You need to capture the existing demand before you start doing demand generation. If there is a demand for what you are selling, start investing in channels that will put your product in front of the right audience. Don't start marketing from the top of the funnel; start from the bottom and move up. So, what are some of the channels you can use to bring your product in front of the right audience? I usually work with B2B SaaS PLG companies, so we generally use: Ads ( for capturing demand in short term) Content ( capturing demand in short and long term) Outreach ( short term) If you don't know where to start, ask your customers about how they look for a new product. P.S: You don't need to do 10 channels at the same time you can do one at a time but do it right What do you do when there is no established category and demand for your product? So, about the investment memorandum! What does this document usually include? Let me explain in my own words: 1. Description of the problem from different angles — what exactly is the problem for the key audience, how they are currently solving it, and market evaluation. 2. Problem solution — how we solve it, how user behavior in the market or the world will change. 3. Traction. Current results on all possible metrics (ARR, ACV, NRR, LTV/CAC, Cohorts, etc.). It's important not to hide or be cunning about anything here if you want investors to have no questions. It’s better to show things as they are, explain why it is so and what you are going to do about it. This will save time for both you and the investors and earn their respect. 4. Forecasts. How we will further capture the market, key growth drivers, and main hypotheses. 5. Everything else — team, FAQ, growth challenges, product roadmap, and anything else you consider important to share in the appendix. Let me know if this is helpful.
