Congratulations to Open Contracting Partnership and the authors Dan Hon, Ryan Ko and Kathrin Frauscher for the release of “Bringing a human-centered approach to government procurement technology”. Don't be put off by #publicprocurement, but lean into the opportunity of bringing it to live, as a service to the public. On just 13 pages, they laid out a powerful case for why “making do” is simply no longer an option, and what steps governments at city, state and federal levels should take: 1/ Focus on public outcomes, 2/ Meet people's needs, 3/ Deliver data we can rely on. They also lay out eight examples of public procurement failure in action, showing the very real cost and human pain caused by not taking action now. A fabulous piece of work, a mission statement and call to action for anyone interested in bringing #governmentinnovation to life at scale! And also a wonderful example of how we can bring to life a seemingly tiresome bureaucratic topic affecting all our lives through clear communications and storytelling!

As an ERG lead and nonprofit leader with over a decade of experience, I’ve recently been struck by the subtle but pervasive racism and lack of transparency in Atlanta’s large Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs). In seeking potential collaboration, I asked these VSOs what I thought were straightforward, data-driven questions—focused on measurable impact and accountability, basic standards for any mission-driven organization. To my surprise, many struggled to provide answers. Beyond emotional marketing and narratives, there was often little data backing up impact claims. This lack of transparency was particularly troubling in conversations with executives who should be deeply informed. I also noticed another major issue: the lack of diversity in VSO leadership. These organizations, meant to serve a diverse veteran community, lacked representation. Coming from a family of veterans of all backgrounds, it was disappointing to rarely see leadership reflecting our diversity. This exclusivity is concerning, especially in a sector that should model inclusivity, unity, and equality. This experience revealed not isolated gaps but a deeper, systemic problem. These large VSOs publicly champion support for veterans while operating with an unspoken bias, leaving out the very groups they claim to serve. If they represent all veterans, why does their leadership and strategy reflect such a narrow demographic? Equally troubling is the lack of data-driven accountability. I hoped to see evidence-based impact behind their programs, but instead often found a reliance on stories over metrics. When asked for measurable results, responses were often evasive or redirected. This reluctance to answer questions underscored that these organizations may be unprepared to meet the evolving needs of today’s veterans. Large VSOs in Atlanta need to understand that claiming to support veterans means little if leadership lacks diversity and if there’s no transparency around real impact. Moving forward, they must be held to the same standards they expect of veterans: accountability, integrity, and a commitment to inclusivity. A sector dedicated to service should prioritize transparency, reflect our community’s diversity, and demonstrate real, measurable outcomes. Our veterans deserve nothing less.

Today we were awarded a Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD) to support the agency’s modernization efforts and its mission to protect human health and the environment. How will #GenAI impact your state's IT workforce? McKinsey & Company and the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) published this report that may answer the question. State of GenAI in state governments: ▪ Nearly all states have made progress ▪ State CIOs are generally excited and impatient to move forward ▪ Expected benefits include productivity boosts, auto-generated content, improved analysis/decision-making, and transformed service delivery ▪ Not much anxiety over job replacement - more likely augmentation ▪ Positive outlook on GenAI impact, reduce repetition, and absorb excess demand. ▪ 57% feel no change in CIO workforce; > 25% believe increased headcount for GenAI ▪ > 50% cite skill shortage as main barrier to success ▪ Greatest concern = lack of CIO workforce skills ▪ Reskilling/upskilling will be needed ▪ Most states are creating Centers of Excellence w/ sandboxes ▪ Data challenges being surfaced with GenAI - need good data ▪ Most common initial use case - customer service chatbot, code creation, doc generation, testing, and data management Checkout the full report for some more great info! Walmart, one of the world’s largest retailers, is scaling back its DEI initiatives, including closing its racial equity center, ending DEI training, and reevaluating supplier diversity programs. While many worry this could hurt marginalized groups, others suggest that the dissolution of formal DEI programs presents an opportunity for companies to adopt more genuine inclusion practices within their core operations.
