What do you think about AI in senior care? Personally, I think we have to be careful with it. When AI presents itself as human, it can be confusing for seniors who may not have strong digital literacy skills. In fact, if they think they're talking to a person and not an AI chatbot, it can be dangerous if they're having a medical emergency or issue. However, there are some helpful use cases. I think Kristen Fischer's exploration of AI here is really interesting. "Artificial intelligence may be a useful communication tool to help older adults with cancer communicate with their doctors and have more of a say in their treatment," she says. AI can provide more context or explanation about certain treatment plans and translate the patient’s needs to clinicians in situations where the patient doesn't feel understood or heard. AI will never replace professionals, but it could help patients and clinicians better understand each other. When planning AI professional development workshops or talks for schools or colleges, workshop leaders often focus on just one question: What do I want the participants to learn? A better way to plan AI PD, and even AI keynote talks, is actually to ask THREE questions. In my recent presentation at the New Jersey AI Literacy Summit, I told the audience that in addition to focusing on what workshop participants should learn, they also need to ask the school leader who organized the PD session "What problem are you trying to solve?" and "What do you want participants to do?" as a result of attending the workshop. I developed these three questions to help plan keynote talks with educational institutions, and it provides me with clarity about the material that I should present. Knowing why you are doing the engagement in the first place (the problem), and the hopeful outcome of the talk or workshop, are critical elements of any successful professional development experience. AI Literacy - the best summary I've seen! Jennifer Stojkovic and Daniel Dominguez Figaredo. This report speaks to tech and non-tech readers about a critical topic many have been slow to acknowledge - the awareness levels of AI by ordinary people. "This paper discusses the characteristics of the “stakeholders first” approach, a framework based on the design of educational initiatives in the area of responsible AI, to address two limitations identified in the literature on AI literacy projects: (1) an emphasis on K-12 students, and the lack of responsible AI offerings for citizens and university students; and (2) an emphasis on the technical components of algorithmic systems and the lack of attention to the social implications of AI." My favorites: • Autofilling PDFs for Medicaid applications — I have two family members on Medicaid LTC and this is such a giant pain in the ass that we pay somebody else to do it every renewal. Maybe not next time… • ATC (air traffic control) for hospital beds, BEFORE the patient even arrives • Turning video into ADL documentation — speaking of Medicaid — this would save so much paperwork, just may need to work out some privacy concerns… What’s your favorite, and/or what ideas does this spark that apply to your world?
