Bias and discrimination are baked into the healthcare system, negatively impacting the health of Black women and other women of color. According to research from KFF, a leading US health policy organization, 1 in 3 Black women say negative experiences with health care providers resulted in worse health, reduced likelihood to seek health care, or switching health care providers. Everyone deserves equitable, patient-centered health care. We must continue to advocate for policies and practices that mitigate provider bias and discrimination and center the humanity of patients. A Healthcare System That Believes Black Women "When Black Women Speak About Pain, We Should Be Believed." Imagine reaching out for help, only to be met with dismissal or disbelief. This is an everyday reality for too many Black women seeking healthcare in Canada. Our pain is questioned, our voices minimized, and our healthcare outcomes suffer as a result. The Vital Signs Survey was designed to document these experiences, to ensure that the needs and concerns of Black women are finally seen and valued. Black adults are 60% more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and are affected by hemoglobin variants, increasing the chance of receiving inaccurate A1c readings. To support health equity, The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health and the State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University collaborated to provide healthcare systems with a tool to measure how they are addressing inequality and racial disparities. This tool will "enable the organization to make systemic changes to promote health equity," said Aimee Afable, Community Engagement Associate Dean at the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, School of Public Health (SPH). As Black Maternal Health Week comes to a close, let's not let the conversation end. Black women continue to face unacceptable health risks during pregnancy and childbirth. This week, we've seen a powerful movement to raise awareness, but the fight for equity in maternal health is ongoing. Here's how we can keep the momentum going: Educate ourselves: Stay informed about the factors contributing to Black maternal health disparities. Advocate for change: Support policies that address racial bias in healthcare and increase access to quality care for Black mothers. Amplify Black voices: Support Black-led organizations like Black Mamas Matter Alliance (blackmamasmatter.org) and share their perspectives. Hold institutions accountable: Demand transparency and action from healthcare systems to improve outcomes for Black mothers. This #WorldAIDSDay, we must address the overlapping health crises of HIV, hepatitis C, STIs, and drug use—not as isolated issues, but as syndemics driven by stigma, criminalization, and systemic inequities. Next week, I’ll be in Albany for the New York State Department of Health Ending the Epidemic/World AIDS Day Summit, where the theme, “Unraveling Syndemics: A Community Response, Shared Solutions,” underscores the collective work needed to drive meaningful change. I’m honored to present alongside Mateo Belen, MSW, on our Gender Affirming Harm Reduction Toolkit, a resource created to support frontline staff in providing affirming, harm reduction-centered care to TGNCNB people who use drugs and s*x workers. This toolkit goes beyond HIV prevention to address hepatitis C, STIs, and drug use while equipping providers with the tools to center dignity, compassion, and equity in their work. Here’s a little background information on Minority Enterprise Development Week - The event, known as Minority Enterprise Development Week, or MED Week, focuses on gaining increased commitment from the federal and state government to award contracts, for those companies with well-organized operations. MED Week is in partnership with the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce (LIAACC). The initiative got its start back in 1983 under President Ronald Reagan, who declared Oct. 2-8 Minority Development Week. Ultimately the goal on Long Island is to expand the program throughout October by 2025. MED Week “will continue to fuel the growth of small business in New York State well into the future,” LIACC President Phil Andrews said in a news release about the upcoming program. Andrews also brought MED Week to New York three years ago. The event coincides with the anniversary of the chamber, which was launched in October of 2010 by John Scott, its founding chairman. “The Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc.’s insight and knowledge of resources in New York State gives the chamber a unique advantage of helping its small business owners who are members of the chamber, and its wider network grow to scale,” Andrews said. “Ultimately, the chamber measures its success in terms of how many businesses increase their revenue, employ more people, and increase the net worth of their enterprises,” he added. The program will focus on leveraging networks through information on growing a customer base and new markets, accessing capital through grants and contracting opportunities.   Event dates: October 9th, 2024, October 15th, 2024 and October 24, 2024. In the spirit of #Juneteenth, we would like to highlight what our CEO, Anthonise Louis Fields Ph.D, is doing to further cancer research for Black Women. "We need to supplement the data with focused study on Black women," Fields said. "So we can understand the full spectrum of what are the factors and the combination of factors that actually causes cancer." Dr. Fields aims to transform the landscape of medical studies by working closely with the American Cancer Society to create a study that is centered around black women. This study, called the Voices of Black Women, will help the American Cancer Society better understand the various and specific health conditions of Black Women, leading to better, more personalized treatment.
