Be Different Be Seen! Recruiting in GOVCON is dang hard. We have a limited amount of resources and even less candidates available for our jobs & Security Cleared talent is always at a premium. As we look for new tools, it is so important to first understand the tools we have and how we can better use them. It is easy to fall into a pattern, "dial it in" and not consider different ways of doing things. This is a perfect example. For a long time, voicemails got ignored and text reigned supreme. Now, as spam invades text, Voicemail has made a popular comeback and it is because the transcription feature. Don't waste the text preview space, use it to get your candidate to engage! Everyone is experiencing low candidate response rate in the GOVCON space, this is one way to help increase that response by a few percentage points. Fixing your response rate does not come from a new system that delivers something "at scale". It comes from little tweaks in messaging and strategic delivery. Remember, you can't recruit people that don't respond

I've never liked the "B2G", "B2B", or "B2C" acronyms, especially in the federal contracting market. I'm going to tell you why... It's simple. We are all human. We are not an enterprise or a government body; we are all living, breathing human beings. When we categorize things as "B2(whatever)," we tend to forget that real people with emotions, needs, and desires are at the core of every transaction. Communication, relationship-building, and mutual understanding tend to go out the window and are replaced by #KPIs and sales funnels. Metrics will only take you so far in the federal marketplace, whereas rapport and trust will build a lasting foundation. Why? Take note good sir. *********************** Transitioning vets... You've probably read on here from several in the transition space that you are likely to move on from your first post-military gig. Sometimes rather quickly. If you are like me (please, no. Do not recommend.), it may take a gig or a few for so many reasons. Industry Function Location Leadership Total comp Shiny object Environment Like I read so much here yesterday, give yourself some grace. It really IS ok. But don't wallow in anything. Work towards solutions. Even the BEST prepared folks get lost sometimes. It's less likely if you are ready (truly ready), but still it happens. Sometimes it takes a while (sounds wonky I know) to find YOU...especially after years in the military. Your happiness (or MOSTLY happy anyway). The place where the center of the Venn is directly found and lived. I wish I had a magic wand to 'show you' how to get there. But mostly (for me) getting there involves self-reflection, personal inventory, mentorship from those I supremely trust, prayer, and well-placed effort. I can tell you this. IT EXISTS. I didn't believe that. I didn't believe in love (great Queensryche song), but found that for real as well. These are not fairy tales. Personal and professional happiness can exist in harmony. I'm proof you CAN.

Reflecting on my military career and the ongoing journey through retirement, I've realized how profoundly the principles of project management have influenced both my professional and personal life. The transition from active duty to civilian life has provided me with unique insights and reinforced many of the key lessons learned during my service. Key Lessons Learned: Leadership and Team Dynamics: Leading diverse teams in high-pressure situations taught me the importance of understanding team dynamics and fostering a collaborative environment. Empowering team members and leveraging their strengths is crucial for success. Adaptability and Resilience: The military environment requires constant adaptability and resilience. These qualities have been indispensable during my retirement process, allowing me to navigate uncertainties and remain focused on my goals. Strategic Planning: The ability to plan strategically and anticipate challenges has been a cornerstone of my military career. This skill has proven equally valuable in managing my transition, helping me set clear objectives and create a roadmap for my future. Resource Management: Efficient resource management was critical in my military roles and continues to be important as I allocate my time, energy, and resources toward new opportunities during retirement. If you're a Surface Warfare Officer (#SWO), you're equipped to lead by setting the standard! Your Sailors will rely on your expertise, requiring you to master everything from engineering to combat systems to navigation. For those of you who know I have a bit of time on my hands. Also I am into my last two years of my career in the military and am probably procrastinating a bit about transitioning. So this week I read this book: Nick Hall’s ‘I Know What to Do So Why Don’t I Do It?’ For me it was an eye-opening exploration of why we procrastinate and, more importantly, how to overcome it. It challenges the notion that procrastination is about laziness or poor time management. Instead, Hall highlights it as an emotional response to discomfort, fear, and the limiting beliefs we often cling to. This idea struck a chord with me as I reflected on my daughter’s experience. At school, she was once told she wasn’t a “maths person.” That label could have held her back, but years later, as part of her medical training at university, she excelled in maths. How? She recognised and rewrote the unhelpful story she’d been telling herself. By tackling tasks with a fresh mindset and embracing small, manageable steps, she turned a perceived weakness into a strength. Hall’s book underscores that the key to real change lies in understanding and managing our emotional triggers, not endlessly refining our to-do lists. He offers practical advice: • Break large projects into smaller, achievable tasks. • Be kind to yourself, especially during challenging times. • Work in harmony with your body’s natural rhythms of productivity and rest. This isn’t just a book about getting things done; it’s about creating healthier, more sustainable habits. If you’ve ever felt stuck despite knowing what you should do, this book might be for you.

Top 10 Tips for Transitioning Military 1. Your LinkedIn profile (page) is your resume.  Build your experience timeline correctly.   2. Take your rank out of your profile.  Civilians don’t know what it is---and the rest of us don’t care. I worked for an awesome General and he said to me “If I ever use the phrase ‘cooling off period’, punch me in the face.”   3. Take the word leadership out of your profile. It’s cliché. No one hires leaders. They hire experts.  In real life you get hired “to a team” not to “lead a team”. Team leaders get hired from within.   4. If military transition experts knew what they were doing, they’d have better jobs. Find industry leaders. Do what they do.  Act like a professional.   5. Don’t talk about your struggles, it makes you sound flaky.  The “Open to Work” badge makes you look like you’re on the clearance aisle at Walmart.  Turn on the “visible to recruiters only.”   6. Don’t comment on controversial subjects---especially politics. It makes you sound divisive.  LinkedIn is “Facebook with consequences.”  The consequence is your unemployment.   7. Comment, comment, and write.  Show insightful thinking and eagerness to learn. It makes you visible to industry leaders that are building teams.   8. Don’t be old.  If you wear a tie on an Amazon interview, they automatically cut you. You’re not “transitioning.” You got fired like the rest of us. Move on with your life.   9. LinkedIn Learning is filled with qualifications.  Start learning.  Let qualifications frame your skill set.   10.  I’m a writer.  I write.  If you’re an expert, be an expert.  If you’re an analyst, analyze. If you’re an artist, share. Be you. If you act like everyone else, you are like everyone else.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Those of you who attended United States Army Human Resources Command's Conversation With Industry Event (#CWI2024) a few weeks ago got the opportunity to hear Major General Tom Drew describe his "Moonshots". What are the big, audacious goals that he wants to solve over the coming years. These don't represent concrete requirements but are more "themes" that we want help thinking about. There are better ways for us to: ☑ See the Army - We have to find a better way to model inventory against requirements and better assess those joining the Army. ☑ See the Solider - Today we equate Skill and Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). A Soldier is more than their rank and job title. How do we differenctiate the skills and map strengths to Army needs and Soldier preferences. ☑ See the Future - How do we forecast needs 5 years from now and provide a new level of predictability. How do we model that forecast and assess the impact on future readiness.
