🚨 Beware of Phone Scams Impersonating Government Agencies 🚨 Today, I received a call supposedly from an immigration law enforcement number; however, the person really was not who he claimed to be. The caller knew my name and introduced himself as a representative of USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services). He alleged that I had complaints of having two separate passports (US & Chinese)with an ongoing investigation. He tried to press me for compliance and warned of the subsequent dire consequences, one being my arrest and detention. In other words, I had some senses getting suspicious regarding this fact: Most government agencies, including USCIS, usually contact individuals through official letters and not any unsolicited phone calls. Nevertheless, I would continue the conversation to give it a hard time; because the caller had become vicious, saying that I was going to face terrible consequences! And to confirm the suspicions of my instincts, he said I wouldn't be able to use my debit or credit cards for 5 or 6 days; at this point, I figured it was a scam! Takeaways for Safeguarding Yourself: 1. Take a Breath: Most likely, a scam. 2. Scale down the conversation and Call the Official Number: Follow a formal procedure contacting the organization through a verifiable source such as their legitimate webpages. 3. Don't Share Personal Information: In no way should you ever share sensitive information such as your Social Security number, bank accounts, and passport over the phone. 4. Know the Protocols: Most government agencies don't start unsolicited phone calls; they usually communicate with individuals through official mail. 5. Report the Scam: Alert your phone carrier and report to the Federal Trade Commission.

Its the news of the hour. Donald Trump wins. And already I am seeing people posting how difficult life will be for immigrants. I am an immigrant in this country myself but here is my take: It is no secret that a vast majority of people holding the H1B worker visa are nowhere close to being a 'special worker' that the visa is intended for. Many IT body shops and consultancies have abused the H1B visa by faking experience and providing an unqualified candidate for the role. I have seen it in my workplace. You would not believe the level of incompetency I have seen from most of these people. There are 'specialty workers' doing Microsoft Office stuff that a high school kid can do. The Trump administration aims to remove this fraud and abuse and I am all for it. If you are one of the people who has diligently worked to get to a high-paying position on H1B, I assure you you have nothing to worry about. If you are somebody who has hacked the system by using an IT consultancy or are a part of said consultancy, you need to be worried. Regarding the potential H4 visa reforms that I have seen immigration lawyers talk about, I don't think being a spouse of a qualified person should automatically mark you as qualified as well. So again, I am all for removing that system. I am trying to convey the message of absolute self-accountability. If you are reliant on the government or on anybody else for your survival and needs, you must work hard to change your situation. Do not blame anyone else. Your excuses are a crutch holding you back and no one else cares about them. The only people that care about your excuses are the ones who want to see you fail and are therefore encouraging them. No, you did not get laid off because of 'unfortunate circumstances'. You got laid off because the company did not deem you good enough to keep with them. No, you did not get rejected because she/he 'was not the right one'. You got rejected because that person did not deem you good enough. SDE job openings are increasing significantly vs the previous quarter. 📈 Looks like the tech hiring market is continuing its steady incline back to full strength. Sharing some great insights curated by Dave Hardwick. • As of the 27th, there have been 45,241 SDE openings on LinkedIn in the U.S. for the last 7 days. • This is +37.2% v. the 13-week rolling average, +95.43% above last week’s count of 23,149, and the highest weekly count for this category of ads this year. ⬆ • Product Manager ads: 5,033 (+79.6% v. the rolling 13-week average of 2,802), and the highest count for this calendar year. ⬆ • Program Manager ads: 7,758 (+73.6% v. the rolling 13-week avg of 4,470), again, highest for the calendar year. ⬆ MAAMA Co’s (SDE job ad counts for this cohort): • Apple: Apple: 0 (continuing their no-job ad trend on LinkedIn since 10/30/23 ↔ • Google: 312 (+100.9% v. their rolling 13-week avg. of 155) ⬆ • Microsoft: 1,544 (+148.7% v. their rolling 13-week avg. of 621)⬆ • Amazon/AWS: 2,009, (+230.5% vs their rolling 13-week avg. of 608)⬆ • Meta: 413 (+434.2% v. their rolling 13-week avg. of 77)⬆ • Total: 4,278 (+192.7% v. their rolling 13-week avg. of 1,461)⬆ ⬆

An interesting new article regarding the H1-B visa program. Especially concerning is paragraph 2: In 2022 and 2023, the top 30 corporations using this program laid off at least 85,000 American workers while they hired over 34,000 new H-1B guest workers. There are estimates that as many as 33 percent of all new Information Technology jobs in America are being filled by guest workers. One could end the entire H1-B visa debate by imposing the following requirements on any company applying for such a visa: You must demonstrate annually that, for each visa recipient, the following conditions are all met: - There are no eligible candidates who meet the hiring criteria currently in the job market in the US - The criteria are general enough to apply to at least 100 people (this just prevents abuse or hiring criteria) - You are offering/paying compensation for the person on the visa which is more than the 90% percentile for the role (ie: greater than the compensation of 90% of employees with a similar role) We could have a third-party independent entity verify this. If talent shortages are a real problem for specialized and high-end roles, and lots of H1-B visa are granted under this criteria, I'd have no issue expanding the number of grants (this would be good for the US, imho). I strongly suspect this would not be the case, though (ie: "everybody" knows this is abused for cheap labor and depressing compensation rates for US employees, it's the huge open lie which all the proponents ignore).

A few years ago, I wrote a post on Quora about interview process for Principal Engineer role at Amazon. In that post, I shared my own experiences as the recruiter owning that hiring process, as well as tips from other Principal Engineers who had been through the process. Even today, I get weekly emails and messages from senior engineers who saw that post and want to learn more about the Amazon interview. We often end up talking about more than just Amazon. We discuss career development and interview skills in general. I really enjoy those conversations! Here’s a quick summary of how a Trump administration could affect high-skilled immigration in the U.S. 1. 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐇-1𝐁 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬: The denial rate for H-1B work visas (for skilled workers) might go up. Under Trump, it was around 18%, compared to just 3% recently. 2. 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇-1𝐁𝐬: There could be more "requests for evidence" (RFEs) where applicants need to provide extra documents. Under Trump, the rate was higher (34%) than it is now (12%). 3. 𝐅𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇-1𝐁 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬: Trump had tried to stop spouses of H-1B workers from being able to work. This might happen again. 4. 𝐋𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐬: Certain visa types like EB-1 (for extraordinary skills) and L-1 (for company transfers) might see fewer approvals, based on Trump’s previous approach. Other categories, like EB-2, didn’t change much last time. 5. 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝: Trump previously aimed to reduce work opportunities for international students on F-1 visas after graduation. 6. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇-1𝐁: Trump proposed raising minimum wages for H-1B holders to make it harder for lower-paid positions to qualify.
