Importance of Skilled Labor to Critical Minerals Establishing a robust domestic midstream for critical minerals is important, and something I'm often asked about. Recently, I published a paper on the topic for the Bipartisan Policy Center (linked below). A key factor to overcome, and one of the most cited by project owners, is the significant recruiting and retaining challenges due to severe labor shortages and intense competition for skilled workers. The U.S. industrial manufacturing sector, which had a shortfall of over 600,000 workers in 2023, is expected to see this gap widen to 2.1 million positions by 2030. This shortage directly impacts critical minerals projects that rely on similar skill sets, exacerbating the pressure on the industry. Critical minerals projects compete with semiconductor and battery manufacturing companies for skilled positions such as machinists, electricians, maintenance staff, equipment operators, and construction workers. Additionally, there is a notable shortage of individuals qualified for specialized roles essential for operational efficiency and quality control, including chemists, quality control analysts, and laboratory technicians. The talent pool is further strained by a 39% decline in mining engineering graduates since 2016, limiting the availability of essential professionals like mining engineers, metallurgists, and geologists. The construction sector, vital for building and maintaining critical minerals processing facilities, is also experiencing a severe labor shortage, with a deficit of 650,000 workers as of July 2023. This shortage impacts infrastructure development in regions where midstream operations are necessary, often requiring significant relocation efforts. To address these challenges, strategic investments in training programs, relocation incentives, supportive immigration policies, and advanced manufacturing technologies are essential. By establishing industry-specific training initiatives and partnering with educational institutions, the sector can develop a pipeline of skilled labor but it will take time a forward-thinking. We must grow the potential pool of interested professionals, with efforts like Project MFG. The topic of skilled labor is one I intend to evaluate deeper to consider what must be done to establish these projects successfully while growing the quality of life for American workers. Oil majors have to manage sections of their shareholder roster that would balk at any deal that increases upstream production. Smaller exploration and production companies also are in the mood to sell, rather than buy. Witness, for instance, Energean itself. It has chosen to unlock value for non-core assets, which it in turn picked up cheaply. Instead it will focus on its big Israeli project, return $200mn to shareholders, and amass some firepower for its next big venture.

Post 2 of 2 on speed in oil and gas tech: Does speed matter on decline curves analysis? Danomics can auto forecast out 5000+ wells in just a few minutes. With stats like that I'd be a fool to say it doesn't... But it only matters if the result (1) trustworthy and (2) you have multiple ways to QC the data to verify that because putting eyes on 5000+ wells is going to take time regardless. But really, how often are you looking at 5000+ wells? What's more like is something like the below. I was looking at a WI% deal that had 20 wells and a half dozen PUDs. Forecasting the 20 wells takes like 0.2 seconds. Manually QCing them and dialing in the results? 30 minutes with lots of nit-picking over each profile. Entering the WI%, royalties, severances, fixed and variable opex, etc. 30 minutes tops. You know what was really important? Looking at the geology and realizing the operator was underperforming other operators in the same geology. Time wasn't the key. Understanding the whole picture was what mattered. Moral of the story? Know the whole story. Don't just assume that geology doesn't matter. Don't spend your time, invest it in getting the right answer.

DT Midstream has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire three FERC-regulated interstate natural gas pipelines from ONEOK for $1.2 billion. The pipelines involved are the Guardian Pipeline, Midwestern Gas Transmission, and Viking Gas Transmission, which collectively span approximately 1,300 miles and have a total capacity exceeding 3.7 billion cubic feet per day. This strategic acquisition aligns with DT Midstream's focus on expanding its natural gas infrastructure and is expected to enhance its pipeline segment's scale and revenue. The transaction is anticipated to close by the end of 2024, subject to customary regulatory approvals. For ONEOK, this sale is part of a broader strategy to optimize its asset portfolio and concentrate on its integrated operating footprint. Recently, ONEOK completed the acquisition of Medallion Midstream, a significant crude oil gathering and transportation system in the Permian Basin, for approximately $2.6 billion. These developments reflect ongoing consolidation and strategic realignment within the midstream energy sector, as companies seek to enhance operational efficiencies and focus on core assets.

Some highlights include: ⚡ To convince financiers to back building such projects, it helps to know that they can guarantee some kind of base load. ⚡ This is where Bitcoin miners have come in. They can take out long-term contracts at a consistent power load, to guarantee a minimum return on capital. ⚡ What happens when the grid upgrades and gets more customers for those new sources, and then demand peaks? Certain customers, like Bitcoin miners, can just turn off. ⚡ Bitcoin miners don't need to save work when they shut down, so they can be off in less than a minute. ⚡ This flexibility is extremely valuable in places with seriously variable demand. Given the current global landscape and the geopolitical risks that exist today, we believe Occidental Petroleum (Ticker: OXY) is a compelling investment opportunity. “Investors seem to be somewhat ignoring energy right now,” said Brian Krawez, CFA, president and lead portfolio manager at Scharf Investments during an appearance on Reuters TV on December 10, 2024. Historical data underscores a sharp contrast from previous years, with the monthly average in 2022 standing at $6.64 compared to $2.743 in 2023. Anticipating forward movements, NYMEX estimates for upcoming years suggest a gradual increase: $2.65 in 2024, $3.54 in 2025, and reaching $4.01 by 2026. Market Technicals Technical analysis indicates current resistance at the $2.06 and $2.10 levels, with a pivotal point at $2.02. Support begins lower at $1.98 and extends to $1.93. This setup comes as we observe a break above the 50-day, 20-day, and 9-day moving averages, which stand at $1.76, $1.78, and $1.79 respectively. Basis and Regional Gas Prices Both PG&E Citygate and Southern California Citygate basis prices have risen, driven by anticipated increases in demand. The 2023 first-of-the-month index shows PG&E at $9.83 and SoCal at $10.95, with SoCal Border averaging at $8.14. Production, Supply, and Demand Dynamics Today’s estimated gas supply totals 105.4Bcf, closely aligning with the recent average. Production estimates are set at 99.9Bcf against today’s demand of 96.2Bcf. The upcoming week’s forecast suggests a demand spike, moving above the norm for this season. LNG and Pipeline Flows LNG exports stand at 11.5Bcf, with exports to Mexico at 6.3Bcf and Canadian imports at 5.5Bcf. A year-on-year comparison highlights a 4.1Bcf/D decrease, marking the most significant annual drop since 2021. Storage and Weather Forecasts U.S. gas storage levels are currently 439Bcf above last year and 655Bcf over the five-year average, totaling 2,425Bcf. Weather patterns remain mild with bullish forecasts for the coming months, supporting higher natural gas prices moving forward. Energy Sector Trends and Renewable Energy Crude oil prices are on a downward trend with the current price at $82.65. Renewable energy contributions are notably impacting CO2 emissions, primarily through a shift from coal to natural gas and solar in the power sector, which saw a 7% emission reduction in 2023. Carbon Offsets and Fixed Price Offers Carbon offset opportunities are varied, ranging from $1 to $375 per unit, providing options for diverse carbon footprint mitigation needs. Indicative fixed prices for natural gas across different regions and periods have been provided, reflecting potential future pricing dynamics. Summary The energy market remains sensitive to weather forecasts, influencing NYMEX and basis prices.
