Excited to announce our investment in Alta Resource Technologies alongside Leonardo Banchik (Voyager Ventures) with participation from Orion Resource Partners, Overture Ventures, and WovenEarth Ventures. Rare earths are critical in products from magnets to ceramics and it's important for the US to develop its own supply chain. While the US has some of the best rare earth resources, separating them has historically proven expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Alta through it's computationally designed and optimized proteins allows the US to bring back rare earth production with a cleaner, lower capex, and lower opex solution - and that's just the beginning. Kettleborough VC has been active for ~6 years, invested in ~30 companies, gone through ~80 funding rounds, witnessed ~12 exits including ~4 instances of partial principal erosion, seen ~4 seed to $100M journeys, tracking ~29% XIRR across the portfolio. A couple of IPOs from the portfolio surely seem very much in line ahead.

I recently saw this metric from Carta’s 1Q24 VC Fund Report, which is very concerning. DPI... is nowhere to be found in earlier vintages that probably should start showing DPI. Funding early-stage projects is great, but ultimately, these venture dollars need to exit their investments and pay back their limited partners. That’s where the metric Distributed to Paid-In Capital (DPI) comes in. While managing a fund, we get interim measures during the life of the fund (e.g. IRR, MOIC), but ultimately, “you can’t eat IRR.” If you want to build a lasting venture capital organization, you need to start showing DPI for your fund. Keep in mind that this is traditional VC data from Carta, and is not strictly crypto venture. Crypto venture tends to get liquidity earlier (tokens) and things tend to go parabolic sooner (faster, more unicorns) - but I’d wager that the data here is somewhat similar for Crypto VCs… Not as much DPI as there should be from these earlier vintages. ex Google CEO Eric Schmidt spoke at Stanford this week. Lots of nuggets here, but most interesting for the near term, Schmidt believes in the next year AI is set to make a big leap forward. He predicts AI will combine three important features: 1. Vast knowledge retention (1 million token models) 2. Text-to-action capability 3. Personal AI agent fleets While the full impact is unknown, everyone may soon command their own AI teams. Here's an example: Imagine you're developing new quantum computing algorithms. Your AI assistants could: - Continuously scan and synthesize global quantum research papers - Generate novel algorithm ideas based on this knowledge - Simulate and test these algorithms across various quantum architectures - Automatically document findings and prepare draft papers - Identify potential collaborators and draft outreach emails All initiated by a command like "Advance our quantum algorithm research." During yesterday's LibreQoS APNIC webinar, I posed the question: won't more bandwidth solve these problems? As Herbert Wolverson said, yes, more bandwidth is good, but, still these problems remain if queueing is done incorrectly. Here's my take on why bandwidth alone is not as good as bandwidth + good queueing policies: Generally it was believed that 'data is important, so don't throw it away; hang on to it and send it later'. In practice, this has proven to be suboptimal as two issues may emerge: 1) latency increases for some flows due to heavy demand from other flows using the same bottleneck link, 2) even a single flow can have excessive latency due to aspects of typical TCP behavior (referred to bufferbloat) when the buffers grew large enough that the data being buffered was retransmitted anyway. It turns out that not all data is equally important. Active Queue Management is the art of deciding priorities, both in deciding what data to throw away, but also in allowing some later arriving data to be transmitted ahead of data in another connection that arrived before it. These problems have been studied, and good solutions have been found by using certain queueing policies in routers and switches, referred to as “fq_codel’ and “cake”. These track the different flows not by classifying the data, but by watching the behavior. Flows that send relatively little data (DNS lookups), or at a measured pace (video chat) have priority over flows that send a lot of data as quickly as possible (App and System updates, Video and ISO downloads).

Exciting news! We just sent out the inaugural newsletter for Future Frontier Capital, our pre-seed venture fund backing frontier tech startups. As I hit "send," I realized how launching FFC parallels the path of the founders we support. Starting FFC has required the same passion, perseverance, and self-belief that drive entrepreneurs. Just like a startup, getting a VC fund off the ground demands relentless hustle—building the brand, perfecting the pitch, and networking tirelessly. Our Q3 update triggered some nice feedback from LPs, so I figured I'd share here as well. Happy EOY update season, to those who celebrate. You’ve probably been flooded all month with US election recaps, so I won’t bore you or depress myself by rehashing the results or ramifications here. And I won’t overindex on any silver-linings, ie crypto regs, as I believe we have a wave of pure chaos cresting over Washington. As with any failed investment, however – Harris & Walz collectively raised $1b and I’d imagine many “LPs” like myself want our money back – it’s always prudent to do a bit of a post-mortem; interestingly, I found that many of my own takeaways closely echoed certain truisms that regularly during both DD and portfolio support: Know your customers – founders on the coasts and cosmopolitan capitals building for the rural, analogue or last-mile better trade in those loafers for boots on the ground. If you don’t develop a unique advantage in understanding your customers’ pain points, traits and values, you don’t deserve to be building for them. “It’s the economy, stupid.” At the end of the day, pricing and value deliver results. Whether fundraising or selling, hone in on the economic upside for all stakeholders and build your moat here.   Respect your competition – belittling rivals belies their market gravity and hubris is the enemy of analysis. Treat competition with genuine curiosity and intellectual rigor. It doesn’t matter if you have the best ideas – if you can’t convince and convert customers en masse, the best technology, product, decks and talent are irrelevant. Don’t be an out-of-touch technophile, and invest in the work to ensure your pitch can and will win. Vanity metrics are irrelevant and a form of echo chamber “copium.” The granular analysis to truly understand the levers behind your KPIs over time and anchor on the numbers that matter. Don’t chug your own KoolAid. I’ll add that, from a climate perspective, it’s truly impossible to underwrite the impacts of this administration. On the one hand, increased tariffs and other protectionist policies will be huge tailwinds for portfolio companies like Estes, building US batteries; on the other hand, Elon is out to help Elon, and we have no idea what that’ll look like for many nascent energy verticals. The generational software layers require more mature underlying ecosystems to first hit venture scale (think POS, smartphones, etc on the fintech side), and we're accordingly consolidating our climate efforts on exceptional founders building real tech. I'm really intrigued by this idea (not mine) that some bitcoin mining companies (Iris, Cleanspark, etc) have successfully built low-cost power shells that can now be leveraged by AI compute needs -- where power itself is becoming the gating factor in the continuing growth of AI. I think this will become a real 2025 story -- as the gating factor of "chip shortage" lessens, and the gating factor of "cheap power" rises in significance. There's not really a venture capital angle here, but there is a public market one. Perhaps more importantly, it becomes a touchpoint between "crypto" and AI. Something to ponder and keep an eye on (full disc: I own a bunch of bitcoin miner stocks, including those mentioned above).

For a young software company, what does a dream end-market look like? A few great signals off the top of my head: ▶️ Low NPS of incumbent solutions ▶️ Lots of manual / lightly-digitized processes ▶️ Many buyers (i.e. top 3 don't control the market) ▶️ High ability to pay (decent margins and trendlines) What else should be on the short list???

DeepCast shipped a number of really cool new features recently in advance of a broad outreach push to podcast listeners. One new feature is our new Daily DeepDigest tool that sends you a concise daily email including any new episodes from the trailing 24 hours from any podcasts you Subscribe to (on DeepCast). Think daily podcast cliff notes or podcast news ticker tape, with a hint of Morning Brew various brews or PitchBook News—it's increasing information throughput when you're pressed for time. And this feature is rapidly evolving to distill other key extractions from shows you're already interested in, but also exposing you to other shows you might be unfamiliar with that also have nuggets to share—and thus increasing your aperture yet still conscious of your time. Want to go deeper on any given episode? Click the episode detail and you're off to an episode on DeepCast, where you can subsequently read a longer form distillation of that episode or go straight to the source and listen to the episode. (And podcaster friends, these pages are definitely increasing indexing and thus Google entry points to your shows!) I'm loving this feature as a user, personally.
