Does anyone have an idea of what specific component this might be? It appears to be a punch holder or part of an ejection mechanism, but I’d like to confirm. Learning isn't always about the subject matter. I've always wanted to learn how to weld. I love designing metal things and made a career of designing metals parts and assemblies. I even have patents on design features. I just never learned to use much metal fabrication equipment. As part of a community improvement project I'm leading, I had the opportunity to finally start learning to weld. One of the people on my team is teaching me while helping me build this thing. He's less than half my age and is an outstanding maker. First day results? I may have almost stuck my practice part to the welding table. Next session? I laid a bead far enough off target that I was asked whether I could see. (I could!) Third session? Weld bead looked awful but was functional. Progress! The welding is improving steadily but what stands out to me is the mental game. I haven't been the worst skilled person at anything in so long that I forgot what it feels like. I haven't submitted beginner level work for assessment in years. The concept of grace feels very different as the recipient. The concept of growth feels very different as the one growing. Pride can quickly rear its head. I've had to be conscious of my pride and appreciate the process, enjoying the learning along the way. This table we're building may have some ugly welds on it, but this old engineer is getting the opportunity to genuinely walk in the footsteps of the young engineers he leads. If I never get good at welding, I hope this learning makes me a better leader.

Last week, I gave up my CAD seat, and my #mastercam seat to one of our engineers/leaders. It didn’t quite hit me until today - for the first time in my career, I don’t have any way to create programs, or anything mechanical. It was a very weird feeling, like everything that has built me to today is gone. But it’s not true. Everything that I’ve built upon over 15 years in this industry has put me where I am. While I may not create programs/designs, I create: ✅ Revenue ✅ Opportunities ✅ Growth ✅ Processes/procedures ✅ Continuity ✅ Stabilization ✅ Future leaders For all the programmers/machinists out there getting ready to move into that next role, just remember… you’re a CREATOR, that is what makes you great at this. Just because an engineering team can design it - doesn’t mean that it can be made. Generally the following challenges arise: 1. Design for Manufacturability Gaps: Engineers design innovative parts, but without considering the limitations of materials, tools, or manufacturing processes. 2. Iterative Development Bottlenecks: Rapid iterations are required in prototyping, but delays in feedback, material procurement, or manufacturing time can slow down the entire product development cycle. 3. Communication breakdowns: Misalignment between engineering teams, their buyers, and manufacturing shops can result in errors, rework, and wasted resources. Overcoming these challenges requires integration between initial design and actual prototype development while keeping track of manufacturing realities. Some thoughts on ways to address these challenges: 1. Automated Manufacturing Feedback: Implementing tools that provide feedback on manufacturability during the design phase can reduce costly errors when it comes to manufacturing parts. 2.
