Have you ever noticed that the word Uber is both a noun and a verb? I have spent years studying shared economy, supply chain and logistics. The first and last mile space has proven profitable and lucrative but also fickle and unpredictable. And I love it. In the world of Yahoos and Googles, Ubers and AirBnBs, a person could argue that branding has very minimal impact on the potential success of a company. I have also spent years studying branding, marketing, product management and customer experience. People love all-inclusive. Sometimes when you're dealing with consumers, a little bit more goes a long way. In WebVans defense, while I'm sure they had the most advanced inventory management system, at the time, I'm sure they didn't have automated storage and retrieval, they didn't have the 5G ecosystem, they didn't have RFID and IOT, they didn't have shared economy and they obviously believed, like Jeff Bezos, that because they had figured out how to deliver a book to your door, they could innovate the entire supply chain. And I love the tenacity. They tried to create an all inclusive customer experience. But like, what happens when the name just kinda sucks? Is it possible that the plateau is being caused by a crappy name? Why would people think Cost Plus is a company that would give them a discount on pharmaceuticals? Why would people think WebVan or GoPuff is the best solution for getting things delivered? Branding is part of the customer experience. It's where the brand loyalty begins and creates the potential for evangelism. Don't forget that part.

Who are you going to buy? And why? 70% of boomer and early X owned businesses will face transition over the next decade. "Seven out of 10 U.S. business owners aged 50-plus will transition out of their businesses within the next decade, according to data from the Exit Planning Institute. This 'Silver Tsunami' means private companies are grappling like never before with the complexities of ensuring continuity in leadership and operations." But it also means there will be enormous opportunities for acquisitions. Do you have a plan? A strategy for what type of acquisitions? Where to look? When to involve an investment banker? Your strategic finance options? Do you have M&A experience on your board? True, you can't take your eye off today's business ball, nor many other pressing topics from cybersecurity to talent management. But that's not a reason for owners to relieve their directors of the responsibility of exploring exits and acquisitions as the environment evolves. As this topic becomes more urgent, I'm really excited for an upcoming episode of the Industrial Growth Institute Podcast with Rudy Scarito. This founder's $40 million dilemma ... Sell or scale? Last week, I spoke with a founder whose manufacturing business is worth a cool $40M. (his projected growth has him at $70 million in enterprise value) He now faces a tough decision: Should he continue growing independently or sell 60% to private equity (PE)? Here's the catch: If he sells, he'll bring on other companies and build a multi-billion dollar platform ... ... while answering to a boss. But the question remains: Is he a one-hit wonder? It's a tough one to answer. The stakes are high: - Exiting now means pocketing an 8-figure windfall. - Continuing solo could mean massive growth but also massive risk. - Acquiring other companies often involves raising debt, further increasing risk. - Selling to PE could make him the founder of a platform with huge potential. There is no perfect answer. But here's my take: - Selling to and EXPERIENCED private equity allows you to take money off the table while still having the opportunity to grow. - Even with a boss, you get a second bite of the apple when the platform eventually sells. I've spent the last 7 years deploying millions into one of America's best-kept secrets: North Carolina's rapidly rising 'Cape Fear' region. Since 2017, I've been asked: “Why Surf City and Wilmington”? Here’s why I'm betting on it becoming the East Coast's next big destination. → An Economic Powerhouse Outpacing the Nation Wilmington - ‘The Port City’ - saw its GDP grow by over $3 billion between 2017-2022. It ranked #7 out of 200 large cities for economic success in 2023. Its 8.8% job growth and 44% wage growth over the past 5 years were key drivers of progress (Milken Institute Report) → A Magnet for Affluent Retirees and Coastal Buyers A warm, sunny climate, affordable living costs, and pristine beaches. This makes the Cape Fear region a top draw for retirement-age folks and relocators from pricier cities. Plus, home prices remain relatively affordable - Wilmington's median price is around $413,000. The Cape Fear region is perfectly positioned to dominate over the next 10 years. • Population and economic growth • Booming tourism and vacation home demand • Affordable coastal destination for vacation or living • Huge infrastructure investments to support expansion That's why I've gone all-in across multiple hospitality projects in the area, like the Saltwater Resort at Topsail Island in Surf City, and The Hive - Wilmington. Most investors are still sleeping on Cape Fear. But this underrated gem won't be a secret for long. Sticking with our old vibe was tough; including restrictions from a few platforms. As AI skeptics are watching, any negative publicity makes us a target, since #AI is still viewed with suspicion. We're expanding our toolset to reach a broader audience and be more helpful to the academic community. We’re not focusing just on students & scientists anymore; we're also stepping into marketing and text creation. The core of what we do is to #reduce the time spent on routine tasks and #focus more on generating better ideas. With the new positioning, we're also on the hunt for funds to accelerate our growth, aim higher, and plan our grand exit in 2025.
