Activities and Societies: President of the IC Yacht Club, 1993-94, represented the College in offshore racing in the Caribbean, France, UK. Also co-wrote & presented a BBC Documentary "Cyberpunks & Technophobes", with the Science & Features / Horizon Films team. Was also a part-time science contributor to the student magazine, Felix.

My PhD was in applying object-oriented programming techniques to computational aerothermodynamics for hypersonic flight vehicles travelling under rarefied gas conditions, utilising Direct Simulation Monte-Carlo (DSMC), under UK Ministry of Defence contract. A feature of DSMC is statistical simulation of collisions between representative molecules and spacecraft surfaces, with 1-D, 2-D and full-3D modelling possible. Object-oriented programming can trade code flexibility and re-usability for performance (vs languages like Fortran 77) so reducing any performance overhead from adopting better engineering methods was a key goal of my work, which was achieved.

Inspired by Metro Screen's MetroMobility project, I co-founded Mobile Monday Sydney with Oliver Weidlich and Shane Williamson... we're talking the time of Nokia and Blackberrys, i-Mode was the latest 3G thing from Japan, and the iPod Touch seemed to beckon with extraordinary possibilities... maybe that thing could turn into a phone?! Oh boy... who knew that Monday nights could be such a blast, as we lived through the arrival of the iPhone and then Android phone! Salad days...

Since 2014, Delta-V has worked hard to get Australia back into the Space business. We've coached dozens of founders, organised pitch contests at major events like IAC2017, provided background briefings at length to state and federal governments, and even ran a space Flashbuild which flew 8 payloads into the upper stratosphere. Today with a Space Agency and government committed to joining NASA's return to the Moon, Delta-V is focused on unlocking the next barrier to Australian startups and SME's…

  • Object-Reuse-Oriented Design of Direct Simulation Monte-Carlo Software for Rarefied Gas Dynamics

Department of Aeronautics Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine

A Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London
and for the Diploma of Imperial College.

This work describes a completely novel approach to investigations of hypersonic flow in Rarefied Gas Dynamics (RGD) with Direct-Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC).

  • Simulation of Chemically Reacting Jet Flow Fields in Aerospace Applications

Aerothermodynamics for space vehicles, Proceedings of the 2nd European Symposium held in ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, 21-25 November, 1994, Edited by J. J. Hunt, Published by European Space Agency (ESA) (Paris), 1995, p.281

The manoeuvring of space vehicles in the upper layers of the atmosphere is a significant problem since the air is too rarefied to exert any aerodynamic force upon the wings, fuselage or control surfaces. The solution is to use reaction control jets - but the interaction of these jets with the hypersonic rarefied flowfield around a space vehicle remains poorly understood. This paper demonstrates the ability to simulate the distribution of two plumes of jet gas in a rarefied hypersonic flowfield…

The solution is to use reaction control jets - but the interaction of these jets with the hypersonic rarefied flowfield around a space vehicle remains poorly understood. This paper demonstrates the ability to simulate the distribution of two plumes of jet gas in a rarefied hypersonic flowfield and on a space vehicle body using the DIrect Simulation Monte Carlo method.
