💾 The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) board has agreed to spend $212 million to get its Muni Metro light rail off floppy disks. After starting initial planning in 2018, the SFMTA originally expected to move to a floppy-disk-free train control system by 2028. Beyond the floppies, though, the Muni Metro needs many more upgrades. The SFMTA plans to spend $700 million (including the $212 million Hitachi contract) to overhaul the light rail's control system. This includes replacing the loop cable system for sending data across the servers and trains. The Muni Metro’s Automatic Train Control System (ATCS) has required 5¼-inch floppy disks since 1998, when it was installed at San Francisco’s Market Street subway station. Autonomous Vehicle (AV) funding is surging, according to PitchBook with Q2 2024 seeing $2.9 billion invested in AV startups - the highest since Q3 2021. While self-driving cars grab headlines, innovative startups are finding unique applications beyond passenger vehicles. Key developments: - Supply chain optimization: Outrider is revolutionizing yard operations with autonomous electric vehicles, addressing a $60 billion market. - Specialized transport: Pyka's autonomous planes for cargo and Gatik's local distribution trucks are gaining traction. - Safety & efficiency: Evitado Technologies automates airside operations, mitigating airport collision risks. Of course, more established companies such as Lyft & Uber are working on AV rideshare integration via partnerships with Waymo, BYD, Zoox, and others. The AV sector is focusing on gradual integration and specific use cases. While concerns about job displacement exist, proponents argue that automation could shift human capital to higher-value roles. Giving a signal boost the fact that U.S. based electric mobility is here, the market is growing, demand is increasing, just not at a 42% YoY rate. EV adoption has slowed from INSANITY - To business as normal, we are still seeing double digit growth, we are still seeing increased interest in e bikes, e scooters, e motos, small 4 wheel electric, light electric vehicles and electric mobility. 42% YoY growth was unsustainable in the long run, we were screaming it from the mountain tops and no one listened. It is funny that so many in our industry talk sustainability, but they refused to adopt sustainable business strategy. Surviving is 1/2 the battle. Back to work for those of us who are still here. Keep the shiny side up!
