#ERCOT's recent approval of NPRR1224 means #energystorage asset operators should expect an increase in ECRS deployments, along with a reduction in real time price volatility. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁: Last year’s introduction of ECRS led to an unintentional increase in energy prices for buyers. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯? 💵 The new product created a new revenue opportunity for energy producers. ⛔ As more assets were bidding into ECRS, their capacity was being held in reserves, and therefore were withheld or unavailable to be dispatched in the real-time energy market. 🙈 To ERCOT it appeared as though supply was not able to meet demand, despite the fact that the capacity was there – this is called artificial scarcity. 📈 Due to the appearance of scarcity, real time prices would increase.  In an effort to quell artificial scarcity, ERCOT is implementing NPRR1224, which enables them to manually release up to 500MW of ECRS capacity from the SCED at a 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 $𝟳𝟱𝟬/𝗠𝗪𝗵 when: 🚨 Energy demand exceeds the supply dispatched by SCED by 40MW or more ⏰ The imbalance lasts for 10 consecutive minutes

Constellation is close to finalizing a $30bn deal to acquire power producer Calpine, a transaction that would significantly bolster its generation capacity amid growing US power demand. The deal, expected to be announced by January 13, is likely to involve a payment structure consisting mostly of stock, with a smaller cash component. Canary Media with an article on how rural electric cooperatives are tapping into the IRA to fund the shift from fossil to renewable generation. "How $7.3B will help rural co-ops build clean power—and close coal plants This Inflation Reduction Act program is offering 16 rural electric co-ops financing to overcome the up-front costs of shifting from dirty coal to clean power. Rural electric cooperatives, which bring electricity to the most sparsely populated parts of the country, are getting their biggest federal investment since the New Deal — and this time around, the money is going to help fight climate change. Last week, the Biden administration announced $7.3 billion in financing for 16 rural co-ops serving about 5 million households across 23 states. The money will be administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which implemented the Rural Electrification Act, the 1936 law that financed the buildout of the grid in more remote areas of the country. It will also be matched by more than $29 billion in private investments with a goal of building more than 10 gigawatts of clean energy. That’s a big jump from the nearly 16 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity co-ops have today." Adding more baseload power plants to the energy mix can worsen the country’s power supply in the long run, said ICSC’s Energy Transition Advisor Alberto III Dalusung in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel. This was in response to former Department of Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla’s statement urging the national government to lift the moratorium on coal-fired power plants, citing a need to build more capacity to meet the rising demand as the Philippines continues to struggle with power supply issues. Instead, the Philippines must focus on shifting to a flexible, distributed power system that makes use of various energy sources, including #RenewableEnergy, said Dalusung. “Most of our capacity is baseload coal power plants, they’re a part of our energy mix. But we don’t need more of them; we have too much. We have to take another step back: what kind of new capacities do we really need to address the situation? Lazard has released a report analyzing Leveled Cost of Electricity (LCOE), a critical measure of cost-efficiency of generation sources across technology types. The report found that onshore wind and utility-scale solar have the lowest LCOE by a large margin…LCOE measures lifetime costs divided by energy production and calculates the present value of the total cost of building and operating a power plant over an assumed lifetime.

The U.S. #windenergy sector is regaining momentum after a temporary dip in 2023, and forecasts are showing revived progress ahead. The Massachusetts Clean Peak Standard (or CPS) will help #renewableenergy developers and operators further increase returns on storage assets. In addition to using #batteries for energy arbitrage, ancillary services, solar firming, curbing curtailment, and more – operators leveraging this program are awarded for having renewable energy available to contribute in what were already the most lucrative hours. Projects able to capture Clean Peak Energy Credits (or CPECs) by combining accurate forecasting and operations that ensure operators deliver into peak hours, will have the winning formula to support grid reliability and maximize revenue as MA transitions the grid. Lazard says fossil fuel costs double that of #utility-scale #solar The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for solar has fallen to between $29/MWh and $92/MWh, according to a new report from Lazard. Utility-scale solar has had the most aggressive cost reduction curve of all technologies, falling about 83% since 2009, when new-build solar generation had an LCOE of over $350/MWh. Solar at the utility-scale is far lower in cost than the LCOE of coal, the least-expensive source of fossil fuel generation. Coal LCOE ranges $69/MWh to $169/MWh, making it nearly double the average LCOE of utility-scale solar assets. Meanwhile, natural gas peaker plants are highly inefficient in LCOE, ranging from $110/MWh to $228/MWh. Nuclear energy had the highest utility-scale LCOE with an average of $182/MWh.
