SiriusXM reported its Q1 earnings this morning, and the headlines are justifiably focused on its loss of subscribers (nearly 500k). Like all radio, its subscription business is highly vulnerable with the move to digital audio, especially in cars. But a bright spot? If you paid attention to Spotify's earnings, you wouldn't be surprised: "off-platform revenue." For SXM, this includes Pandora and podcast revenue, which saw a 7% revenue increase. During their investor call, they signaled the growth for podcasts, explicitly saying, "Podcasting revenue saw a 22% year-over-year lift in the quarter, while programmatic podcast revenue increased 12% sequentially and 97% year over year." I'd love to see SXM break out the podcast numbers even further, but if you look at what they do provide, it's easy to conclude that podcast revenue is growing much faster than other segments. For example, Pandora continues to bleed users (64k paid subs in Q1 alone), so podcast revenue seems to be the tide lifting all "off-platform" boats. When asked about their podcast initiatives, Scott Greenstein said, "One is, you know, the podcast thing and industry is really still in the second or third inning, so it's evolving." He is 100% right. SXM also signaled that it will continue to license more podcast content and is not closing the book on exclusive content. One more fun nugget: On today's call, podcasts were mentioned 30 times. Pandora was only mentioned ten times, SmartLess nine times, and Howard Stern... zero point zero. On the heels of the Walmart acquisition of VIZIO, Roku has partnered with The Trade Desk, allowing TTD’s customers with access to Roku's data to enhance campaign optimization for streaming viewers via ACR data. This is in line with Roku’s partnerships strategy and creating more demand and collaboration within their walled garden to drive yield with enhanced audience precision, but this behind the velvet rope of PMP deals. Based on ffmpeg I developed and open sourced a live encoder service that provides a REST API and Web User Interface to start and stop the ffmpeg encoder. This code is now available as a service in Open Source Cloud. This means that you can try this out without having to have your own infrastructure for it at first. But if you later decide you want to run it on your own infrastructure there is nothing preventing you from it, as the code is open source and available on GitHub. Troubles Plaguing Cable TV are Coming for Broadcast Next. With the Los Angeles Dodgers sprinting to a 3-0 lead in the World Series much of the street and the sports business media focused on how a sweep would impact Fox’s economics. The broadcast network reportedly stood to miss out on as much as $150mm in ‘potential’ advertising revenue if the New York Yankees could not extend the series. “But when it comes to major sports’ broadcast partners, all of them, largely succeed or fail based upon the value of multi-year contractual retrans fees; and the MLB post post-season, including the World Series, is no exception.” Nevertheless, retransmission fees are collected, like pay TV network fees, based on the number of subscribers inside the bundle. If that universe continues shrinking, the broadcast networks will eventually find themselves in a similar circumstance to their cable counterparts.
