In earth-shattering entertainment news, the studio Sony Pictures bought the Austin-based cinema chain Alamo Drafthouse. Studios could not own movie theaters due to anti-trust competition until the 1948 Paramount Decree sunset in 2020. The rule was established after a few studios bought theaters on the verge of bankruptcy because of the Spanish Flu. What's old is new again in the post-pandemic era. The one major studio without a streaming service buying a theater chain is an interesting development. (Their movies usually go to Netflix, 4-5 months after theatrical.) The theatrical exhibition industry needs this, and I am hopeful for Alamo's future and the chain's creative business model, which leans into experiences.

You want a transform LUT? I’ll build you a Lookup Table , I’ll get your color transformed by 3 o’clock this afternoon with CDLs and CSTs. As a camera technician I’ve explored the color gamuts from Sony to Canon and….up to ARRI. In your wisdom ITU you created Rec. 709 and the bright flowering colors of HD video. Motion Picture Imaging’s new restoration of Hitchcock’s 1959 American spy thriller “North by Northwest” has now been released on 4K Blu-ray and the positive reception of this remaster has been incredibly gratifying. Originally shot on 8-perf 35mm film in the VistaVision horizontal format by Burks using a Mitchell VistaVision camera (which was later used for visual effects in Star Wars) with spherical lenses (35, 50, and 75mm), the film was finished photochemically with Technicolor and released in theaters with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. For its 65th anniversary 4K Ultra HD release, Warner Motion Picture Imaging scanned the original 8-perf 35mm VistaVision camera negative in 13K (each half scanned in 6.5K and digitally stitched together), with all restoration work completed in 6.5K. Colorist Sheri Eisenberg expertly graded then film, addressing challenges such as “Vista flicker” (caused by the aging and fading of different parts of the larger VistaVision frame), color dye instability (notably extreme fading in the blue-yellow channel), and significant film shrinkage (especially in the final act’s forest scenes near Mount Rushmore). An IB Technicolor print from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences archives was used as a reference for color restoration and high dynamic range grading (available in HDR10). The Film Foundation approved the completed restoration. The review from Hi-Def Digest praises the disc: “From the first frame of Leo the Lion letting out his mighty roar, it’s clear this new transfer is going to be a treat. Throughout the viewing, I had a full appreciation of fine details that never really caught my eye before. Color saturation is right on point with the HDR10 grade giving full due attention to key primaries. Elements are in pristine shape without any distracting artifacts and film grain has a refined fine quality without appearing noisy or static. Truly a beautiful offering." Blu-ray.com awarded the 4K Blu-ray release perfect scores for both picture and sound quality in their review: “I simply can't say enough good things about Warner Bros.' new 2160p/HDR10 transfer of North by Northwest, which is advertised as being sourced from a brand-new restoration and clearly advances upon previous discs including the 50th Anniversary Blu-ray. Colors are more tastefully robust overall and so is fine detail, which is clearly more visible in close-ups and extremely wide shots alike; this also brings forth more organic textures and overall depth as well. The entire image is spotless while still retaining a tangible level of film grain.. the new HDR application is also extremely tasteful and heightens contrast levels as well as color saturation while not exaggerating skin tones or blowing out bright whites."

How much does a one-minute video cost? No gatekeeping here. You may have seen video budgets at $1,000 or even $100,000. What gives? Well, video pricing is shaped by a bunch of factors. → Crew → Talent → Concept → Equipment → Video length → Location and permits → Agency expertise/reputation → Revisions and changes → Efficiency and speed → Distribution strategy → Travel and logistics → Exchange rates And while I could go on about countless other variables, I’ll try to keep this post as concise as possible. A common assumption is that video cost is directly tied to video length. We see it a lot. But a 10-second video with a helicopter and explosions is gonna cost way more than a 5-minute interview video. Specialized crew, locations, props, and equipment would all be big factors there, even though the video length is much shorter. The good news? You can create cost effective video campaigns by smartly adjusting these factors—and maybe leave out the helicopter for budget's sake. "Cut to the chase. How much does video cost?" Let’s break down some budget tiers and types of videos. I’m using tiers instead of numbers because, again, video costs vary (I know you’re probably sick of hearing this by now). But at the end of this post I’ll tell you the budgets we typically work with to give you a sense of numbers. $ - REPURPOSING CONTENT Transforming existing footage into new, engaging formats like highlight reels or social media posts. $$ - STOCK VIDEO & TYPOGRAPHY These types of videos offer solid value for specific goals, even if they’re not fully custom. And with AI on the rise, these costs are only going south. $$$ - INTERVIEWS & CASE STUDIES Perfect for internal comms, thought leadership, and showcasing testimonials and case studies. Factors like script writing, filming days, location, travel, video length, and number of interviews all influence cost here. $$$$ - ANIMATION Great for explaining complex concepts or guiding customers through product tutorials. Animators with more experience can create beautiful videos, but their talent comes with a price tag. $$$$$ - COMMERCIAL / LIVE-ACTION Ideal for creating deep emotional connections and brand awareness. Top of funnel awareness, story-driven commercials have the most variables in terms of concept and style, so they also vary the most in terms of budget. ***These tiers are just starting points; the actual cost will vary depending on all the project variables. At Oak + Rumble, our project budgets typically range from $10,000 to $100,000+ CAD. In my opinion… It’s crucial to work with a video agency that you trust. You do get what you pay for. An agency/client dynamic that works towards the same goal and values transparency with the budget numbers is the recipe for success here. Is there a difference between a Director of Photography (DP) and a Live Production Camera Operator? I recently caught up with Alexis Wolff to talk about this. As multi-camera Directors, we’ve both worked with DPs and Camera Operators, and Alexis shared a great story from a recent project that highlights the differences between the two. Traditionally, cinema and live broadcast have been mostly separate crafts. But over the last decade, as companies like Blackmagic Design and vMix have made multi-camera production more accessible, more and more filmmakers from the cinema world have been making the shift into live production. The difference? DPs tend to focus on carefully framed, controlled shots. In live production, though, as Directors we often rely on wider, “safety” shots that give us flexibility—buying time when we’re unsure where the conversation will go next. Alexis and I talked about how these conversations are really about balancing the artistic vision with the fast-paced demands of live events. It’s all about making sure everyone understands what’s needed to pull off a show that hits both the creative goals and what the client’s looking for.
