Transitioning teachers might be curious…what do instructional designers actually DO? Here is an example of a real world project I am working on this month. Working in tech, we regularly roll out software updates, version releases, and new functionality. My big focus for this month is a curriculum refresh for all of the training materials that are impacted by the latest release. For instructor led training, updating the text in slide decks and quick reference guides is pretty straightforward, followed by swapping out screenshots with new visuals to represent the current GUI (interface). For on-demand content, it's a bit more time intensive because I need to record new audio and edit the video demos to incorporate the narration. More complex impacts are related to customer delivery. I have to stay clear on which version of the software customers are purchasing so we deliver the right training. I stay organized by managing the course catalog and source files. Many of us are looking for our next eLearning/ID opportunity What are you doing now to prepare for your next opportunity? I'm reading up on eLearning and ID trends in today's social media world. I'm also learning how to use CapCut to create and edit videos. In my past life, I created and published videos for plumbing companies such as Mike Diamond (CA) and Rheem Water Heaters. 📣 Calling all Instructional Designers 📣 Do you use these accessible technologies in your work? Many of these technologies are used cohesively and interchangeably. Here's a bit more information: Screen readers: Are you tabbing through your documents and eLearning to assess if they are being read properly? Alt text: Descriptive captions for images, giving them a voice for screen readers. Closed captions: The on-screen subtitles for videos, a must-have for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. Keyboard navigation: No mouse? No problem! Navigate websites and apps smoothly using just your keyboard. Voice control: Speak your commands! This feature allows hands-free interaction with devices and applications. Color contrast: Highlighting text and images with clear contrast against the background ensures readability for everyone. Font size and styles: Clear, readable fonts in appropriate sizes make information clear and legible. Don't forget these bonus considerations! Reading Order: Using those accessibility checkers to confirm information is read by screen readers in a clear and logical order. I get a lot of requests, but the most common–and frustrating–might be to facilitate introductions. 🙃 Most of these requests look something like this: "Hey! I noticed you're connected to Person X. Do you think you could provide an introduction?" Although this approach is well-intentioned, it might be the worst way to solicit assistance. There are a few fundamental issues here: 1.) Just because you're connected to someone doesn't mean you can facilitate a meaningful introduction. Aside from people I've worked directly with, there are maybe a few dozen people I know well enough to initiate a meaningful introduction. 2.) Just because you're connected to someone doesn't mean you can vouch for them. If I don't know you well, I also can't vouch for you, which means I'm probably not willing to reach out to someone else and recommend you. Simple as that. Nothing personal. 3.) This kind of cold messaging simply isn't effective in general. If you want an introduction to someone, the best person to procure one from is a current coworker. I completely understand why folks ask for introductions, but it's a lot like asking for a reference, and an introduction from a relative stranger might be worse than simply reaching out yourself.

As an instructional design consultant, one of my greatest joys is the ability to align my work with my personal mission. Let's normalize updating our resume, LinkedIn profile, and portfolios on a regular basis. I try to update mine every quarter, and each time my partner sees me doing that he anxiously asks me if I was fired, poor guy. I've got mentees who are afraid to update their materials because they don't want their new employer to think they're prepping to leave. Block time on your calendar to update your job application materials even if you're not job hunting. Yes, there's a level of safety in knowing that one has their resume ready at a moment's notice. But also you should be celebrating, owning, and documenting accomplishments on a regular basis. *** Who Killed ADDIE?*** Our victim: ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Once the undisputed queen of instructional design frameworks, ADDIE reigned supreme, used by everyone from bakeries training new bakers to the US military crafting complex combat simulations. But whispers of discontent have been swirling for years. Instructional Design (ID) professionals, the brilliant minds behind your most engaging learning experiences, have begun to question ADDIE's methods. Was she truly the flawless framework she was cracked up to be, or were there cracks in her seemingly perfect facade? The Accusation: Some ID professionals accuse ADDIE of being too rigid. They argue that her linear, step-by-step approach stifles creativity and doesn't adapt well to the ever-changing landscape of learning. They liken her to a master chef following a single recipe, unable to improvise with fresh ingredients or adjust to dietary restrictions (learner needs!). The Defense: Hold on! Before we declare ADDIE dead, let's hear from her loyal supporters. They argue that ADDIE provides a solid foundation, a roadmap for building effective learning experiences. They say she may not be able to prepare a complex dish like Nigerian Jollof, but she can whip up a delicious, well-balanced learning meal, ensuring all the essential aspects are covered every time. Her advocates also point out her versatility. They argue that ADDIE is more like a toolbox than a single tool. "You don't throw away your toolbox because it doesn't have a specific tool you need," they counter. "You just get the right tool for the job!" The Verdict So, who killed ADDIE? The answer is...no one. While some may consider her outdated, ADDIE is more likely the victim of a changing landscape. Instructional design has evolved, embracing agile methodologies and a focus on learner-centric experiences. But here's the twist, ADDIE's core principles – analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation – remain essential. They're the cornerstones of effective learning design, no matter the methodology employed. As ID professionals, we must be like detectives, gathering evidence (learner needs, content, technology) and using our knowledge of various frameworks (like ADDIE) to solve the case which is creating the most impactful learning experience possible. When you’re new to instructional design or eLearning development, the start of any project can seem chaotic. It’s easy to become overwhelmed trying to meet with the right people, collect all of the right content, ask the right questions, and make sure all of the moving parts happen the way they’re supposed to. After all, the success of any instructional design project on the back end hinges squarely on the planning that happened on the front end. And this is where conducting an instructional design project kickoff meeting comes into play!
