The renewable energy mix – biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, and wind – is now nearly 30% of total US electrical generating capacity. In FERC’s latest monthly “Energy Infrastructure Update” (with data through May 31, 2024), which was reviewed by the SUN DAY Campaign, for the first five months of 2024, 10,669 MW of solar and 2,095 MW of wind came online, respectively. Combined with 212 MW of hydropower and 3 MW of biomass, renewables year-to-date (YTD) were 89.91% of capacity added, not including the 1,100 MW Vogtle-4 nuclear reactor in Georgia. On the fossil fuel front, 348 MW of gas and 5 MW of oil came online.

Realizing this is a snapshot in time but why do utilities and consumers have to deal with the rollercoaster. Look at all the news the past couple of weeks when the stock market went up and down a few times. They call it volatility. It makes people nervous and stressed. If there is one thing we as an energy industry need is stability in energy prices. Yes, wind and solar have caused the volatility with their intermittent and low capacity factor but we need the wind and solar too. What is truly needed is a market that values base load generation for what it does to ensure reliability and avoid the volatility like this. If base load generation is valued properly we would see more utilities and developers investing in the right resources for the grid which is a balanced approach (all of the above).

Excited to share our new report I co-authored with Wesley Cole on the revenue analysis for energy storage systems in the United States. Our analysis, using historical prices, future projections, and FERC data reveals key insights: 🔹 Location matters most: The “right” site often outweighs having the “best” storage device. 🔹 Cost challenges: Current storage costs is considerably higher than the cost of the lowest-price nodes. 🔹 Efficiency impacts: Round-trip efficiency drives revenue, but its value diminishes at higher efficiencies. This is a great initiative by the SPP market and is much appreciated. Primary drivers are: ⏩ Load growth ⏩Severe weather impacts ⏩Renewable growth Breaking down important facts: #datacenters Load growth upgrades are primarily targeting New Mexico and North Dakota areas. Oil and gas developments in these regions are creating load growth, which, in turn, is driving the need for transmission investment. #Winterstorm Revisions to the 2024 ITP scope also identified a Target Area consisting of southern and south-central Missouri, northwest Arkansas, and southeast Kansas following the winter storm. #renewables Wind capacity increased by an average of 33% for each scenario, with solar capacity also seeing significant growth. To connect 45.5GW Energy and 27.7GW of Capacity, the cluster study identified approximately $10 billion in reliability network upgrades, predominantly in Dominion and ComEd, where around 60% of MW from the queue plans to connect. FERC has approved NERC’s revised ROP to identify and register unregistered IBRs connected to the Bulk-Power System by May 2026, addressing a reliability gap associated with the increasing integration of IBRs on the grid. The new Category 2 GO/GOP will apply to entities owning or operating IBRs with an aggregate nameplate capacity of 20 MVA and above and are connected to 60 kV and above. 🔍 Impact: 📈~14% increase in visibility of existing IBRs. ✅~98% of IBRs will comply NERC Reliability Standards, on par with conventional resources. ⚡This strengthens the reliability and resilience of our electric grid. 💡 It's fascinating to consider the implications of incremental load demand from data centers on energy supply and pricing. Recently, I came across an insightful article from BNEF. It highlights how a high ratio of solar/wind energy additions can couple pricing to solar supply (aka sunshine). Yet, even with Texas' impressive growth in renewable energy, data center demand could soon outpace supply. This raises important questions: 🌍 Should citizens compete with AI for access to power? ⚡ Should there be a limit to data center power consumption, beyond which back-to-meter (BTM) solutions or grid-enhancing strategies must be applied? The convergence of renewable energy, AI, and power demand is shaping our future, and I'm curious to hear thoughts from the community. Hydrogen plant development is rapidly emerging as a major source of load growth. While green hydrogen currently makes up ~ ≤ 1% of hydrogen production in the U.S., the shift is happening fast. According to a report by GridStrategies, the U.S. currently has 116 MW of hydrogen capacity, with 657 MW under construction and 3.8 GW planned or announced~30 times the current capacity.⚡ In the long term, hydrogen could play a much larger role, particularly as the demand for green hydrogen increases, potentially impacting grid dynamics. Key considerations include: 🔋 The magnitude and location of additional load
🌍 Energy flow and grid connection points
🔌 Hydrogen’s potential to provide grid services like frequency and voltage support
🌎The need for coordinated grid planning and reinforcements As electrolysers connect to the grid, new challenges in capacity, stability, and flexibility will need to be addressed.
