That legacy continues, including within the #nonproliferation space where researchers are dedicated to ensuring nuclear materials are used safely, securely, and peacefully. Andrew Conant, Ph.D., nuclear nonproliferation researcher, is partnering with experts at other #DOE #NationalLabs to run checks on #nuclearreactor #isotopes. By essentially retracing the footsteps of these isotopes, researchers can help discover the intent for the nuclear material — fuel or, possibly, weapons.

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science has announced a new research and development opportunity led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to advance technologies and drive new capabilities for future #supercomputers. GA Power just brought online our 4th new #nuclear reactor (aka clean energy) so I like to run the air conditioner with our windows open ♻️👈🤡 Fact✅: Nuclear energy is sometimes referred to as a #cleanenergy technology as it produces nearly zero carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas #emissions. Fact✅: Unlike many renewable energy sources, power from nuclear energy can be generated 24 hours a day and isn’t dependent on the weather, like #windenergy and solar power tend to be. The power of the atom has been at the heart of electricity generation for more than half a century. Nuclear power stations use a miniscule amount of fuel to generate the same amount of #electricity that a coal or gas power station would. For example, 1 kg of uranium contains the same amount of energy as 2.7 million kg of coal, so nuclear fueld is considered to be a reliable source of energy for decades to come. Nuke vs Solar... Nuclear has a capacity factor of close to 100% because it typically produces as much generation as possible during every hour of the year. #Solarpower, on the other hand, can only produce electricity when the sun is out. This means that over the course of the year, #solar power plants will produce their maximum amount of generation in just 17-20% total hours, on average.☀️👈🤡 The US is the world's largest producer of #nuclearpower, generating more than 30% of the world’s total nuclear capacity. There are 93 operational reactors across 55 nuclear power plants in the country, offering a combined generational capacity of 95.4GW -- making up 20% of the electricity mix. As the UK and US aim for #netzero by 2050, the mix of electricity generation will change. Nuclear energy is likely to play a role globally in helping nuclear-capable nations achieve these goals. In the #UK, the construction of Hinkley Point C in Somerset has marked the current government’s intention to have nuclear as a pillar of its energy mix. Sizewell C – a sister plant to the active B station – is currently under consultation, with a proposed generation of 3.2GW. As of 2021 in the US, there are plans to ‘uprate’ existing reactors to increase their generation capacity, while two new reactors at Plant Vogtle in #Georgia, came online in 2023 and both #3 and #4 are fully operational in 2014. The future may also see the introduction of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). These are smaller version of nuclear power plants, similar to those that power nuclear submarines and ships. While SMRs’ power output is substantially less than a full-scale nuclear power station (they generate as little as a 1/5 of current-generation reactors), they can be more easily manufactured and transported to where they’re needed, before being dismantled and returned at the end of their operating life. SMRs also have safety benefits as they’re inherently simpler than large reactors and rely, primarily, on passive systems to shut down instead of human intervention. Nuclear for the win ⚛️👈🏆

The advanced research project agency (ARPA) of US Office of Nuclear Energy | U.S. Department of Energy released a request for proposals on the transmutation of nuclear waste. It clearly states the ambition to "transmute" long-lived nuclear waste using Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) very similar to the Transmutex design. The ambition is noble and grand, to reduce the time frame of the entire US stockpile of nuclear waste from hundreds of thousands of years to about 300 years in just a few decades. Here is the stated goal: "ARPA-E seeks to make a truly transformative decrease to this time frame, seeking to enable the transmutation of the entirety of the U.S. commercial UNF stockpile within 30 years. This shifts the issue of UNF disposal from an intergenerational issue to an intragenerational one. " Congratulations to the DOE for this amazing and noble initiative. Smaller #nuclearenergy technology could play a role in bolstering the U.S. nuclear industry due to potential #economic advantages over traditional plants, a University of Wisconsin-Madison expert says. That’s according to Dr. Ben Lindley, assistant professor of #nuclearengineering and #engineeringphysics at the university. He spoke yesterday during a seminar focused on small modular reactors and #microreactors, hosted by the Wisconsin Energy Institute. He noted about 90 nuclear reactors are operating in the United States, and several had been closed down in recent years due to economic reasons, such as cheaper gas and variability in #energy prices. But over just the past two years or so, other factors have driven “a dramatic reversal of fortunes” for #nuclear, as data centers drive higher electricity demand amid higher gas prices linked to the war in #Ukraine. “So now, there are currently plans to restart at least two of the ones that shut down … and the current plants are also thinking about how they drive even more power out of their existing plants,” he said, noting that will require substantial investments in these facilities. 🔎 Read more at https://lnkd.in/gXKjarHc

A new article of the Special Issue #Radar for Space Observation: Systems, Methods and Applications is out"🔥 💡 Wideband radars are used routinely for characterizing satellites in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO). However, powerful radars with sensitivity sufficient for GEO ranges (36,000 km or greater) are lacking. Colleagues Alexander Serrano, Jack Capper, Robert L. Morrison, Jr., and Mohamed Abouzahra present a novel range-Doppler-time (RDT) tensor processing technique for GEO characterization with narrowband radar. 🛰 The technique generates fully resolved 2D images of rotating GEO satellites in low-bandwidth scenarios. When aspect angle change is limited, it provides detailed Doppler information for enhanced satellite status monitoring. A comprehensive quantitative analysis of the technique that considers the impact of key parameters on characterization performance is also presented. Exciting news in the world of fusion energy! Zap Energy, along with their collaborators at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, University of California, San Diego, and University of Washington, have achieved a significant milestone in fusion energy. They’ve published a peer-reviewed article demonstrating electron temperature greater than 10 million degrees in a sheared-flow-stabilized Z pinch. This is a major physics milestone for the broader fusion energy research community. This achievement marks a dividing line between “concept exploration” and readiness for “concept development” as measured by the Lawson criterion. It’s a testament to the hard work, dedication, and innovation of the team at Zap Energy and their collaborators. We’re thrilled to see such progress in the field of fusion energy.
