chpter. , founded by Tesh Mbaabu and his friends, raised $1.2 million pre-seed last week in a round that was led by former investors in their previous startup, MarketForce. I saw a comment from X, saying that the product that chpter. has out there so far, has so many problems, that it is basically a waiting list with a poorly-designed landing page. Which is true. I went to see the live site myself and the observation was not far off. HOWEVER. I think a lot of people who have never built startups don't really know how startups work. I lead a team of talented individuals building Mentorlst and I have picked up a few lessons. First, chpter. raised pre-seed funding, which means at this point, investors were looking at four things: the team, the idea, the total addressable market (TAM) and the go-to-market strategy. And looking at chpter. , it nails down these four perfectly, except one, which I will explain. The team, led by Tesh Mbaabu has experience running a busy startup operating in many markets, and this experience cannot be substituted for anything else. It is also the reason why even after WeWork failed after allegations of financial misappropriation, Adam Neumann, the CEO and founder, still managed to raise money from investors for his subsequent ideas. It doesn't matter whether a founder fails in his first or nth startup, as long as he has the experience of building products, managing teams and raising funds. Investors value the experience and network above everything else. Second, the TAM. chpter. is building a product to enable e-commerce businesses to automate customer relationship management at its basic. Social/e-commerce is the new zone of commerce and the African market is untapped. I don't know whether customers really need a chpter. like product vs what they are already using such as WhatsApp Business, but it remains to be seen. This is why I have doubts with the product, but products can always grow and even pivot. The market they are after is there, the only challenge is to grab a share of that market from social media giants and existing players. Third is GTM. I won't comment much on this but this is what a lot of founders struggle with, given that many founders confuse GTM strategy with marketing. GTM is the whole strategy of taking a new product to market and driving demand for it, and marketing is just part of it. I haven't seen much activity from chpter. in the socials, and I am hoping that the funding they have acquired will boost their GTM efforts in the coming months. One last thing: When investors give you money, they don't deposit that money in your account and give you a debit card to spend it. Such funding always come with conditions that must be met, which includes figures and milestones you have to hit before you unlock more levels of that funding. It is the same way the IMF works. This is why startups sometimes die shortly after raising funding, because they failed to meet these conditions. #mentorlst

I’ve been fired twice, failed as a founder, but I’ve never been more excited about the future. I grew up in LA, the son of Armenian immigrants who didn’t know how to quit. My folks were blue-collar entrepreneurs who fixed cars, ran small businesses, and hustled nonstop. They taught me two things: Hard work is the only way up. You never quit, no matter how bad it gets. That mindset got me into sales. I had zero connections, but had some grit. And I worked my way up to becoming a 3x head of sales. And then I got fired. Twice. (DM me for advice if you're considering a HoS job) It crushed me. The first time, I was angry. The second time, I felt like a fraud. So I did what a stubborn and proud person would do: I dreamt bigger, and started a company. I founded Collect IQ and poured everything into it, but we failed. But failure teaches you things....clarity: focus on what matters. That’s when we built AgentGrow. The key was to solve a real problem that I can relate to. We help heads of sales build enough pipeline to hit their goals. And It’s working. We’re gaining traction. People DM me when OpenAI is down to understand why they can’t use the product. Moral here is that Careers aren’t linear. You’ll get fired. You’ll fail. You’ll doubt yourself. But if you keep going, you’ll figure it out. I really enjoyed breaking in our new studio to sit down with Temporal Technologies Co-Founders Samar Abbas and Maxim Fateev for the latest episode of Founded & Funded. Temporal was founded in 2019 based on an open-source microservices orchestration engine project but is the result of a more than decade-long partnership between the two co-founders that spanned their time working on different iterations of the same thing at AWS, Microsoft, and Uber. Another Ai post... Yesterday, I attended an enlighting talk called "What the Tech is Going On?" at the Center for Innovation: The Green House Project and Pioneer Network conference with the likes of Joe Velderman of Cypress Living, Vipan Nikore MD, MBA, FACP of Homecare Hub, Mohammad Ghassemi of Michigan State University, moderated by the one and only Jack York. It was around everything Ai. Being lazy (or efficient!) I used my notetaker (PLAUD.AI) to record the session, took the transcript, uploaded it into ChatGPT, and asked for some insights on the good, the bad, and the immediate opportunities on Ai to share with you all. Here it is... The Good 🎉: AI presents promising solutions to optimize senior care—whether enhancing personalized resident experiences, supporting clinical decision-making, or increasing operational efficiency. AI can automate repetitive tasks, freeing up staff to spend more meaningful time with residents. This technology offers hope for bridging staffing gaps by handling administrative tasks, helping create a resident-centered environment where staff can focus on care over paperwork. The Bad ⚠️: The challenge? Implementation and acceptance. With the healthcare workforce already stretched thin, additional training can feel overwhelming. Resistance to tech adoption is common in an industry that deeply values personal connection and trust. The upfront investment and integration complexities can also be a hurdle, especially for smaller operators. Immediate Opportunities 💡: We’re on the edge of AI truly enhancing senior care. TL;DR Despite bureaucratic and financial challenges, collaboration efforts are beginning to pay off, bridging the gap between startups and military needs. The future looks bright as these agile, tech-savvy companies push forward, promising a stronger, smarter defense system, one we can seek to emulate. We don't have to re-learn these lessons when a near peer fight becomes unavoidable. Let's provide an avenue for lessons learned by our allies in Ukraine and Israel to be analyzed and adopted, as appropriate, in the US joint force.
