November truly felt like “world conference month.” We proudly represented moveUP - digital therapies at three prestigious events in Chicago, Dallas, and Paris, immersing ourselves in conversations shaping the future of healthcare. At Becker's Healthcare ASC conference in Chicago, the spotlight was on driving transformative efficiency in ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs). With more care moving out of hospitals, ASCs are leading the charge in delivering higher quality care at lower costs. Yet, the key to unlocking full potential lies in data: capturing insights before, during, and after surgery. Dr. Charlie DeCook’s inspiring “12 by 12” method demonstrated how efficiency can revolutionize workflows within the OR, while Dr. Jared Weir, M.D. showcased how digital tools and asynchronous telehealth save valuable time outside the OR. The perfect combination? In Dallas at American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), action spoke louder than words. Connecting with key opinion leaders in hip and knee surgery & breakthrough innovators was both humbling and energizing. Data emerged again as orthopedics’ next frontier—challenging yet essential. The feedback on our platform was incredible, and we’re excited to bring it to life in Texas! Finally, at Sofcot Officiel in Paris, we showcased our breakthroughs in data collection, patient selection & PBOMs, the next step in objective patient outcome measurements. Our collaboration with MicroPort Orthopedics stood out, combining patient outcomes and robotic data to pioneer personalized surgical planning. Exciting progress! Across all three events, one thing was clear: the future is digital, data-driven, and deeply collaborative. Last but not least at Becker's Healthcare CEO/CFO conference - terrific panel led by my ECG Management Consultants colleague Steve McMillen, including Andrew Chang from UChicago Medicine, Patrick Cockey from Jefferson Health, and Maura Buxton from CVS Health. Topic: The Digital Patient Experience. Fascinating discussion in which the panelists agreed on many things, but productively disagreed on some topics. These are my favorite panel discussions, where constructive disagreement fosters truly engaging dialogue. Some of my takeaways (not attributed to any individual member of the panel): (1) The term "digital front door" can imply that we want everyone to begin their journey with us on a device or through an app; we really should be talking about making every channel accessible and seamless. (2) Improving patient experience is necessary but not sufficient; any solution should also simplify provider workflow. (3) We have a lot to learn from our existing patients and consumers, but also much to learn from those who choose NOT to engage with us digitally. #patientexperience #leadership #healthcare

Alot of bad actors and a few good actors. $2.5T HC capital raised & $1T invested by PE in last decade. $31B in 2013 vs. $217B in 2021. We know the story. Misaligned incentives - unrealistic multiples, short-term profit focus, aggressive cost-cutting, unrealistic scaling, misunderstood market dynamics, just to name a few. However, our industry needs money. But our industry is more infrastructure asset class than tech start-up (James Nicholls gave me that epiphany). Mic drop on the lyrical genius of Alex Fair of MedStartr Ventures as he literally gives the whole story poetic justice as he reads HIS POEM on this "On The Road at VIVE" episode of The Reverse Mullet Healthcare Podcast w/BP2 Health. This is the perfect episode for a Friday afternoon! He and Paulo J Machado donned the actual reverse mullets and joined us back in February at #VIVE2024 to talk about the need for REAL change in healthcare, startup focus and investor expectations. 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 When Geoffrey Moore's 𝑪𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒔𝒎 was first recommended to me, I remember thinking, “How does an IT-centric book apply to medical?” But it really does! The book highlights the gap between early adopters and the mainstream market. Many growth-stage MedTech companies I’ve worked with get stuck in that chasm—fantastic technology, devoted early adopters, but little expansion within or beyond those initial accounts. To cross that gap, you must find a mainstream niche with a serious pain point your solution addresses. Then, build out the services around your product so you’re solving the entire problem and focus on dominating that specific niche. It may seem counterintuitive, but the smaller the niche, the better because dominating the niche is key. Mainstream buyers will seek validation from peers like themselves, not the early adopters you have already convinced. Yes, KOLs can help, but they must be relatable to your mainstream target physicians. 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐈 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧: 1. Overusing early adopters as references 2. At Ardent, I'm proud of the way we are leveraging technology to make healthcare better. Take our partnership with Qventus, Inc, which uses AI to make operating rooms across our system run more smoothly, for example... Navigating OR logistics to schedule surgeries can be a slow and complicated process, too often resulting in wasted blocks of surgical time and delays for patients. Qventus makes this process more efficient by using AI to predict surgeon schedules, expected case volume and OR space, and sharing this information with surgeons and schedulers to ensure the right surgeries happen in the right rooms at the right times. As a result, patients can get their procedures sooner, surgeons' time is better managed, and the OR team can spend more time on patient care instead of coordinating schedules. There's no doubt AI has the potential to improve healthcare. But it isn't a magic bullet. It's up to us to identify ways we can use it to improve broken processes or bridge time-consuming, inefficient gaps. And, most importantly, we have to answer the question: Does this make healthcare better for the people at the heart of it - the patient and caregiver?
