California community choice aggregator MCE and developer Golden State Clean Energy (GSCE) have partnered to work on a solar-plus-storage project in California, the first in a plan to install up 20GW of solar and 20GW of energy storage. MCE and GSCE will work on a solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) project as part of a development programme known as the Valley Clean Infrastructure Plan. The Valley Clean Infrastructure Plan aims to repurpose up to 130,000 acres of drainage-impaired or water-challenged lands in the Westlands Water District in Fresno County. The District is the largest agricultural water district in the US at 614,000 acres, or 2,400 square kilometres, and serves the agricultural sector. At full buildout, the plan would include up to 20GW of solar and 20GW of energy storage, which, if achieved, would cover one-sixth of California’s electricity requirements in 2035, MCE said. In the nearer term, MCE and GCSE have entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for 200-400MW of solar and BESS. The actions in California centered around Community Solar continue to contradict the very public sustainable journey that the State has been on. In fact, "California has seen massive growth across the solar power sector. However, it has actually not been a leader in the community solar realm. It has installed just 163 MW of community solar, far less than the 2,000 MW installed in New York or even the 1,100 MW installed in little old Massachusetts." Furthermore, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, last week, the CPUC "voted to approve its proposed decision that crushes any chance of a scalable community solar program succeeding in California." Certainly, the dawn of new solar technologies is here. Energy Toolbase along with Stellar Solar Commercial have brought forth a solar and energy storage project in Mira Loma, California. The project features two significant solar carport structures, contributing a massive 197 kW capacity to the 24-acre transport campus. Additionally, a BYD Chess 60 kW / 266 kWh energy storage system managed by Acumen EMS controls software has been introduced. Most importantly, time-of-use (TOU) demand charge management is used for maximum efficiency. During peak TOU periods, the battery discharges when the site's metered demand goes past a predetermined threshold, ensuring the metered demand is always consistent, leading to cost savings and peak operational efficiency. The project modelling platform by Energy Toolbase, ETB Developer, was key in forecasting the potential savings from this storage system. Marten Transport, the company managing the campus, previously had installed solar panels but had no plan in place for handling peak demand charges. This new implementation provided them with a comprehensive system to manage not only moderate electricity consumption but even demand spikes. The ETB Monitor tool is used for continuous assessment and optimization of the system’s performance and savings in real-time. Such inspiring projects underline the benefits and efficiency of solar power showcasing the pathway to a cleaner and sustainable future.
