While the TechBio industry stands at the crossroads of technology and biotechnology, offering tremendous transformative potential, finding the right positioning remains a persistent challenge. Reading a recent blog by Ankit Gupta (Thanks Pierre Bartet for sharing this insightful document!) has deepened my reflection on how TechBio is a sector in search of stability and success stories. This is evident in the heterogeneous business and operational models most TechBio companies have at this moment. During the mapping of French TechBio in Drug Discovery, produced with other colleagues within the Business commission of France Biotech, that I presented at the first French TechBio event last November (check my other posts!), this diversity in models stood out starkly. The lack of a definitive, standard model highlights the ongoing struggle within the sector. One major contributor to this instability is the ecosystem’s lack of understanding of what TechBio companies do and how they achieve their goals. VCs, pharma companies, public institutions, and other stakeholders often lack the tools to accurately evaluate the potential these companies bring, but also incorporate them in their traditional procurement systems. This misalignment makes it difficult for TechBio companies to fit within traditional standards that have been long established for better-understood sectors like Biotech. Consider the example shared in Ankit’s blog about Reverie Labs. Beginning as an AI-driven software provider for Pharma, Reverie evolved into a full-fledged drug discovery company with its proprietary pipeline. This eventually led to its acquisition by Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc.. This transition—from selling tools to creating assets—reflects a broader trend among TechBio companies as they navigate and redefine their value propositions. Similar shifts (or a doubling down) have been seen recently with companies like BenevolentAI and Recursion. The journey hasn’t been straightforward, but the challenges faced by TechBio signal an industry in constant growth and reinvention. Despite the uncertainties of the current landscape, the future of TechBio is undeniably bright. The intersection of technology and biology is reshaping how we think about innovation, and TechBio companies are poised to play a leading role in this transformation. I had the privilege of attending the Bridging the Gap seminar series: Connecting Science, Industry, & Cell & Gene Therapy today, and it was truly insightful. The esteemed panel consisting of #DrSiddharthaMukherjee, #TomWhitehead, #DrPatrickHanley, and #AlbertRibickas shared their valuable insights. What resonated with me the most was the story behind the story - the human resilience and tenacity displayed by the workers who built the #Immuneel #GMP facility during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite facing limited resources s, these workers diligently continued their work, even going so far as to build a village around the facility. Their unwavering dedication is truly commendable. There were several other key takeaways from the seminar: The #FDA recognizes the impact of cell and gene therapies and is committed to accelerating the approval process and improving patient access. This understanding is crucial for the advancement of these modalities. The #regulatory aspects of cell and gene therapies are equally important, particularly in terms of #standardization and global adoption. Ensuring regulatory compliance is essential for the success and widespread acceptance of these therapies. #AI and #machinelearning have the potential to revolutionize the development of new technologies and expedite #drugdiscovery. By analyzing #geneticdata, identifying patterns, and assessing #riskfactors and patient profiles, these technologies can assist physicians in identifying the most suitable candidates for therapy. Overall, the seminar provided valuable insights into the intersection of science, industry, and cell and gene therapy. Oral Cancer This poster elegantly illustrates the challenges in treatment of this deadly form of head and neck cancer, how multi-omic approaches can help in detection and identification of different stages, which in turn can help in identifying appropriate therapies for individual patients. What I particularly like about his poster is that is describes the factors for resistance to drugs based on some Hanahan- Weinberg hallmarks, and compares the molecular features of tumours in relationship to different tumor stages. Such educational posters are very useful for creating awareness about cancer. Dr Gargi, Hope we see more posters like this !

Let's say you're at a family reunion and everyone's sharing stories about relatives, like Great Aunt Gita's incredible memory or Uncle Rahul's battle with diabetes. These stories aren't just small talk; they're clues to the genetic legacy shared within your family. Mukherjee explains that many traits and diseases are passed down from generation to generation through our genes, much like family heirlooms. For instance, if many people in your family have had heart disease, it’s like a pattern that keeps showing up through the generations. This doesn’t mean everyone will definitely get heart disease, but it’s like having a family tendency that makes it more likely. By understanding these patterns, doctors can predict certain health risks and manage them before they become serious problems.
