NHTSA’s New AEB Mandate: A Stumbling Block or Stepping Stone to Full Autonomy? Dr. Matt Markel, Business Leader, Radar & Autonomy Expert with experience at Waymo and in the defense industry joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss the NHTSA mandate requiring AEB (automatic emergency braking) systems in all new light vehicles by 2029 and what impact this mandate will have on the development of autonomous vehicles. While the mandate doesn’t specifically require LiDAR, Dr. Markel believes a radar+camera sensor fusion approach will likely be the dominant solution that automakers implement to meet this new regulation. With the Atlantic hurricane season underway and the National Hurricane Center forecasting above average activity for 2024, the Satellite Industry Association (SIA) is encouraging policy and lawmakers to continue considering the vital role satellites play in providing communications and other important services before, during and after a natural disaster. November saw progress in RTCA’s Special Committee work advancing aviation technologies.   SC-214 (Standards for Air Traffic Data Communication Services) made progress toward finalizing interoperability standards for next-generation air traffic communication.   SC-243 (Airborne Electronic Hardware Development Assurance) advanced efforts to enhance airborne electronic hardware safety, preparing for future standards.   SC-228 (Minimum Performance Standards for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems) continued refining performance standards for uncrewed aircraft, focusing on detect and avoid technologies.   This progress reflects continued work to innovate and ensure aviation safety.
