Should AI "digital twin" avatars attend meetings in our stead, even if the technology is eventually developed and deployed? I have to agree with Georgetown professor Jeanine Turner (quoted below by Yahoo News, which is quoting Fortune--I'm sharing the Yahoo article because Fortune is paywalled) that being able to attend three or more simultaneous meetings would merely be "perpetuating the madness" of too many meetings. Bottom line for me is that if the AI avatars are just in the meeting to sit there rather than to participate in decision-making (since the tech is not there yet), their human twins should not be required to go to those meetings in the first place. (I am fortunate that the leadership at my organization has very efficient meetings that always end on time--a first in my career.) On the flip side, if people are scheduled for three simultaneous meetings where they are supposed to participate, and the simultaneity is enabled by AI, they may feel they have to watch the recordings later, and who could possibly have time for that? I would certainly want to know if my avatar said something crazy. Not to mention our rights--wouldn't employees have the right to withhold permission for a "digital twin" to be created in the first place? What if the avatar "left the office" and got out into the wild? Even without leaving the virtual conference room, it could be hacked and manipulated.

Want to know how robotics has done in 2024? I like to call this guest contribution by Diana Wolf T. the "State of Robotics 2024" it's so comprehensive, detailed, and holistic in terms of ethics and marrying progress with real world challenges and considerations. One of the highest quality guest posts I've ever had on the topic of Generative AI and robotics. New from me: There's a lot of buzz at the moment about humanoid robots but Peggy Johnson, CEO of Agility Robotics isn't a fan of the jazz hands. "The hype, in general, is not great for the industry because people think it's somehow not here and now," Johnson told me in an interview at Web Summit earlier this month. "My job is to say, no, it is here and now. Humanoids are deployed right now and are getting paid to do work." She discussed exactly how robots go about collecting a salary, the company's latest efforts to create robots that can safely cowork with humans, and why Agility Robotics is being cautious with AI. Releasing Llama 3.1 as open source carries significant implications. By open-sourcing a 405 billion parameter model, Zuck claims to democratise advanced AI, enabling researchers, developers, and companies to innovate without prohibitive costs. He intends to encourage global collaboration and rapid advancements as the community builds on Meta’s work. Zuck argues the economic impact will be substantial, with startups and small businesses leveraging state-of-the-art AI capabilities, potentially driving new business models, products, and services. He also advocates for educational institutions, gaining resources to enhance AI education and prepare a skilled workforce. I’m with him on the former, but I’m not so sure about the latter. This is clearly a bold move from a company with a business model that doesn’t rely on providing AI as a service for revenue. Lucky him. He’s firm in his belief that open source will raise all boats on a rising tide. We’ll see. Hope he’s right. Many will claim this openness comes with ethical and safety concerns—deepfakes and all that. I don’t think there’s any more risk than with closed-source models because closed source simply means not yet visible to outsiders, including bad actors. Really? How do we know that? In any case, it won’t stay this way forever. One way or another, it will be exposed. So having billions of eyeballs working on and learning how to use and misuse a major model is better than having this done by who knows whom behind closed doors. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. It will be interesting to see if Meta’s strategy sets a new benchmark in the competitive AI landscape, prompting other companies to adopt similar open-source approaches. One intriguing aspect is how Llama 3.1 promises to open new research avenues, especially in synthetic data generation and model distillation. Zuck talks about everyone having “their own model.” It sounds like a Tower of Babel, but it does mean that one can take a very powerful model as a baseline, and tweak it for specific purposes, whether that’s improved customer service or orchestrating the takeover of Taiwan with autonomous weapons.
