Research cited: "78% of marketers believe their briefs provide clear strategic direction. Only 5% of agencies agree." Working at an agency gave me the experience to know that this is very true! So always begin agency projects with a brief that outlines your goals, metrics (measure of success), target audience, channel strategy, competitive landscape, timing, etc. to get the most out of your vendor relationships. #marketing #digitalmarketing

This reminds me of a marketing anecdote that I’ve heard & used many times to make the case for consistent branding & messaging: that it takes at least 10 touch points for a target to remember your brand. And if your brand look, value prop, or messaging changes, you’re back to square one. But when I went to source this common data point, I had a hard time finding anything current or definitive. It's you against you. I've been making my way through Phil Knight's Shoe Dog. It's a fantastic memoir of Nike's early days. The Just Do It campaign from Weiden + Kennedy in 1988 is often lauded as the greatest marketing/advertising tagline/campaign in history and rightfully so. But in his memoir, Knight spends time talking about Nike's first campaign from 1977 called "There is No Finish Line". And it's amazing to see just how much Nike got right in that first creative campaign. 1. It's emotional and deeply truthful for any runner who is out logging lonely mile after lonely mile in pursuit of .... in pursuit of what? A metaphorical finish line that doesn't exist because there's always another race, another training session, another run. 2. The line, "At Nike we understand that feeling." A perfect way to connect the brand to it's buyers in a simple, authentic, and empathic way. 3. The creative also ties into Nike's commitment to keep pushing innovative boundaries in their product on behalf of their customer. What does this have to do with B2B marketing? Hell if I know. But so few ads and content in B2B evoke this kind of sentiment. Nike got it perfect on it's first try and the notion of there is no finish line is the other side of the just do it coin.
