I just attended a very interesting webinar on this last week. Many people thing you can choose whether or not your placed on FMLA, but the DOL says otherwise. Whether you're an employer or employee, this is some good info to know! #HRInfo #FMLA #DOL

Too many words! In HR, we often send emails with detailed information for employees. Maybe it is how to apply for FMLA, or how to renew a license or certification, or the steps to follow for benefits enrollment. We also often complain that no one reads the emails we send. We get calls asking us questions that were answered in the email we just sent. The frustration is real! But… what if we stopped complaining that no one read the email and started considering the employees’ perspective? Could we send the information differently? Is there a better way to communicate the same information? Details and compliance are important, but sometimes too many words can block the intended message. We have to self evaluate, to reflect on our own practices with a willingness to shift.

My HR heart is so happy about this ruling! This conversation has been happening for a long time, and finally we are seeing the law start to catch up to this century and some semblance of reasonability. What's left to be seen, however, is how employers handle the change. Will they raise base wages to meet new minimums and keep people over the minimum salary thresholds to avoid overtime? Or will they let things play out and pay those under the new thresholds OT instead? What do you think? Any day progress is made towards a more fair, just, and equitable workplace is a good day!

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has finalized recent changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), including a significant increase to the minimum salary threshold for exempt employees. The FLSA establishes rules for how many U.S. workers get paid.
