Some commonly used frameworks in Management Consultancy: 1. SWOT 2. Porter's 5 forces 3. BCG Matrix 4. McKinsey's 7S Framework Let’s discuss each of them in brief.👇 1. SWOT Analysis: SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. It’s a strategic tool that management uses to evaluate the company's Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Strengths and Weaknesses are internal factors, while Opportunities and Threats are external. ✨Example: Nike's strengths can be strong brand recognition, but weaknesses like dependency on overseas manufacturing can pose threats in case of geopolitical instability. 2. Porter's Five Forces: Introduced in a 1979 article published in the Harvard Business Review, Porter’s Five Forces remains a fundamental tool for analyzing competitive forces to assess profitability. The five forces are: Supplier bargaining power, customer bargaining power, competition, threat of substitutes, and threat of new entrants. 3. BCG Matrix: The BCG Matrix categorizes products into four groups based on market share and growth rates, helping companies to analyze their product portfolio. Strategy is the roadmap that turns product visions into real-world outcomes, guiding every decision from ideation to execution. Michael Porter nailed it when he said, "The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do." HBR’s 10 Must Reads: On Strategy dives deep into these critical choices, offering insights that every product leader can put into practice. In the next few posts, I'll break down the highlights from each article and share how these concepts can be applied with a product management lens. "What is Strategy?" by Michael Porter -Operational Efficiency vs. Strategic Advantage: Companies often get caught up in "Operational Efficiency," pushing for continuous improvement at the cost of what truly makes them competitive. As a product manager, this hits home—it's not just about rolling out features and optimizing processes. We must focus on the bigger picture: what makes our product unique and valuable in the market. -The Trap of Acquisitions: It's easy for organizations to fall into the trap of acquisitions, thinking they can outpace the competition by buying them out. But this often kills innovation. For us product managers, it’s a lesson to focus on fostering internal creativity and innovation rather than just copying or acquiring competitors. Our product’s edge lies in its distinctiveness. -Strategic Positioning: Porter outlines three areas of strategic positioning: needs-based, variety-based, and access-based. From a product perspective, this translates to a deep understanding of our target users and deciding how our product can uniquely meet their needs—whether that’s through specialized features (variety-based), focusing on specific customer segments (needs-based), or optimizing delivery (access-based). - Trade-offs in Competing: Strategy is about making tough choices, just like prioritizing features, markets, and resources in product management. This means ensuring that every feature and decision aligns with the overall product strategy. This alignment prevents imitation and creates a unique and hard-to-replicate product experience. -Growth vs. Strategic Trade-offs: Pursuing growth can sometimes cloud our judgment when making critical strategic trade-offs, leading to a diluted focus on quality and core features. As product managers, we need to resist the urge to chase every growth opportunity and instead focus on refining our product in ways that deepen its appeal to our target audience. Sustainable growth comes from making smart, strategic decisions that align with our product’s long-term goals.

Should “Strategy” drive AI or should “AI” drive strategy? What if you reimagine this question as WHEN should the “Strategy” drive AI and WHEN should “AI” drive strategy? The first question could be answered in the following manner. ➡️ AI driving strategy has two potential interpretations: ✨ AI being the model that drives the company's strategy. I don't think even the best models are capable of autonomous decision making. You can use them to derive insights, but you have to consider your instinct, gut and domain knowledge to take the final call. My suspicion is that O3 or Gemini 2.0 are heavily post trained on certain domains, and they do not necessarily think as much as they are capable of solving bigger patterns. The model can indeed do the various strategy templates and semi-exhaustively take most of the data into account and help with context. However, that is still a more capable data analyst and not a strategist. ✨ AI being the fad that execs want to tap into to score brownie points in their orgs. This should be avoided in most scenarios. Although proudly copying and adopting solutions that have worked in similar scenarios is a good idea in some cases. ➡️ I do not have a good answer to the second question. Is there a time when you should have AI driving strategy for your company? Are there use cases where AI could prove to be better than humans? Possibly. Please lmk your thoughts.
