As a Board Member and NYU part-time student, I took the opportunity to analyze the Change Healthcare cyber incident and make some recommendations for specific actions. The UHG Change Healthcare incident should be a wake-up call from a cyber and privacy perspective. Cybersecurity incidents in healthcare have significant impacts that extend beyond the boundaries of a single company. This means public and private entities must keep up with cybersecurity hygiene and demand the same of third-party providers. Given cybersecurity attacks will persist and grow in sophistication, public and private boards must strengthen board governance and improve oversight. Key actions can include establishing a dedicated cybersecurity committee, ensuring proper cybersecurity expertise at the board level, and leveraging established processes such as the NIST 2.0 Framework to gain visibility and drive outcomes. The National Security Strategy and agencies must view the healthcare technology infrastructure as part of our nation’s critical infrastructure and drive technology innovation, policy changes, and investments to safeguard our healthcare future.
