The genetic control of neocortex volume and covariation with neocortical gene expression in mice.
BMC Neuroscience
This study is the first to use the expanded set of BXD strains to map neocortical volume, and we found that normal variation of this trait is, at least in part, genetically modulated. These results provide a baseline from which to assess the genetic contribution to regional variation in neocortical volume, as well as other neuroanatomic phenotypes that may contribute to variation in regional volume, such as proliferation, death, and number and packing density of neurons

Survival, integration, and axon growth support of glia transplanted into the chronically contused spinal cord.
Journal of Cell Transplantation
Due to an ever-growing population of individuals with chronic spinal cord injury, there is a need for experimental models to translate efficacious regenerative and reparative acute therapies to chronic injury application. The present study assessed the ability of fluid grafts of either Schwann cells (SCs) or olfactory ensheathing glia (OEG) to facilitate the growth of supraspinal and afferent axons and promote restitution of hind limb function after transplantation into a 2-month-old, moderate,…

Over 80,000 people are on the National Organ Transplantation Waiting List. Eighteen of them die each day. Shiv Gaglani worked on a novel method to build replacement tissue and organs for these patients. After joining a team of South Carolina researchers, he advanced a method to “print” tissue structures using an ordinary, desktop inkjet printer and computer aided designs. By printing two dimensional layers one on top of another (“rapid prototyping”), he was able to construct a 3D branching tube of smooth muscle and endothelial cells – basically, a blood vessel. This novel approach allows rapid fabrication of 3D, multi-cellular tissue, or the building blocks of organs. He has continued his work in biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine by working with stem cells and nanotechnology at Harvard University.
