The renewable energy mix – biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, and wind – is now nearly 30% of total US electrical generating capacity. In FERC’s latest monthly “Energy Infrastructure Update” (with data through May 31, 2024), which was reviewed by the SUN DAY Campaign, for the first five months of 2024, 10,669 MW of solar and 2,095 MW of wind came online, respectively. Combined with 212 MW of hydropower and 3 MW of biomass, renewables year-to-date (YTD) were 89.91% of capacity added, not including the 1,100 MW Vogtle-4 nuclear reactor in Georgia. On the fossil fuel front, 348 MW of gas and 5 MW of oil came online.

Hydrogen plant development is rapidly emerging as a major source of load growth. While green hydrogen currently makes up ~ ≤ 1% of hydrogen production in the U.S., the shift is happening fast. According to a report by GridStrategies, the U.S. currently has 116 MW of hydrogen capacity, with 657 MW under construction and 3.8 GW planned or announced~30 times the current capacity.⚡ In the long term, hydrogen could play a much larger role, particularly as the demand for green hydrogen increases, potentially impacting grid dynamics. Key considerations include: 🔋 The magnitude and location of additional load
🌍 Energy flow and grid connection points
🔌 Hydrogen’s potential to provide grid services like frequency and voltage support

Realizing this is a snapshot in time but why do utilities and consumers have to deal with the rollercoaster. Look at all the news the past couple of weeks when the stock market went up and down a few times. They call it volatility. It makes people nervous and stressed. If there is one thing we as an energy industry need is stability in energy prices. Yes, wind and solar have caused the volatility with their intermittent and low capacity factor but we need the wind and solar too. What is truly needed is a market that values base load generation for what it does to ensure reliability and avoid the volatility like this. If base load generation is valued properly we would see more utilities and developers investing in the right resources for the grid which is a balanced approach (all of the above).

On May 8th, Texas energy storage supplied 3,195 MW to the Texas grid! This breaks ERCOT records for both most amount of energy storage powering the grid and largest percentage of the grid being powered by energy storage. #energystorage #ERCOT #Texas #energytransition
