This coming Tuesday (October 22nd) the RPI Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology will host our next speaker of the Fall 2024 Seminar Series! [Supported by the Charles E. Reed Lecture Series Fund] Speaker: Prof. Colin Smith (Wesleyan University) [RPI Host: Prof. Gaetano Montelione] Seminar Title: “Exploring Unexpected Terrain in Protein Energy Landscapes” Abstract: “Proteins are in constant motion and interconvert between different conformational states. This talk will cover efforts to understand the connection between structure, dynamics and function for two classes of de novo computationally designed proteins: 1) mini Fluorescence Activating Proteins (mFAPs) capable of binding to and activating the florescence of a small-molecule chromophore. 2) Miniprotein inhibitors which have recently emerged as a new technology to create proteins that bind with high affinity to specific sites on therapeutic targets. We have used a combination of computational simulation and NMR spectroscopy to investigate how undesirable dynamics and spontaneous chemical modification affects their function and homogeneity. I will also discuss algorithmic advances we have made to characterize their dynamics and rationally alter their free energy landscapes." 🚨 The cost of running top-tier athletic programs and graduate studies is about to surge — and many universities are unprepared for the fallout. For decades, these two areas have been crucial for higher ed operations and allowed universities to have inexpensive talent that powered the institution: ⚙️ Graduate programs have fueled research, provided cost-effective teaching, and helped institutions scale undergraduate enrollment. 🏟️ Athletics has served as the “front door” to universities, defining their brand and shaping the student experience. But now, the rising costs could reshape the landscape. What happens when universities can’t afford to sustain competitive athletic teams or invest in graduate programs outside the sciences? It’s a question of priorities and strategy: ▪️Will institutions shift their focus entirely to those that generate the most revenue and prestige? ▪️How will the student experience and university branding evolve without robust athletics? ▪️And what happens to the essential role grad students play in teaching and research? We enjoyed discussing how USP's vision can enhance #supplychain and #access with safe, reliable drugs.

Reasons why using a CRT and Critical Mixed Race Studies lens are important in Sociology. Demographers should take into account that the remnants of US anti-miscegenation laws were only fully repealed in 2000 (Alabama), which has shifted social attitudes toward interracial/inter-ethnic marriages in the last 30 years. There are 3x more interracial marriages with a white spouse now than in 1980. That also means there are more mixed race students of color in K12 and heading into college than ever before. The 2020 Census captured a 276% increase of the US multiracial population compared to 2010. White-alone fell 9% and white-in-combination on average increased 300% (750+% in Texas and Florida). Where are the white students in Higher Ed? There are simply not as many monoracial white students to enroll anymore. And anti-DEI policy makers know that.
