For years, companies have leveraged climate issues to gain publicity and showcase their commitment to sustainability. However, reaching the public may become harder as climate journalism faces a sharp decline, with newsroom cuts and fewer dedicated climate desks across major outlets (see the link in the first comment). The news primarily comes from the U.S., where CNBC recently shut down its climate team after just two and a half years. The Los Angeles Times laid off 20% of its newsroom, including an Emmy-winning producer of climate documentaries. Even niche outlets like Energy Monitor and Trellis have seen climate journalists lose their roles. This decline is due to budget cuts, public fatigue with climate stories, and the politicisation of the issue. Many journalists are viewed more as advocates than objective reporters, leading companies to hesitate in engaging with them. But perhaps most importantly, audience engagement with climate content has dropped, prompting media outlets to cut positions that don’t drive traffic. For companies focusing on climate initiatives, this trend creates new challenges. With fewer journalists covering environmental issues, impactful corporate sustainability efforts risk going unnoticed. Remaining reporters are often stretched thin, unable to give climate topics the depth they deserve. The decline in climate journalism has global repercussions, including in Thailand, where rising sea levels and deforestation demand attention. Thai companies may find it harder to gain international media recognition. So, what to do? Perhaps, we must rely more on owned media, shared media and partnerships with NGOs, as well as direct engagement with audiences to ensure that climate initiatives are effectively communicated. With the changing of the administrations in Washington, DC and turnover in Pennsylvania, I wanted to fill a gap by creating a job board for public relations, communications, public affairs, and digital jobs for Pennsylvanians. I created a board aggregating communications jobs in Pennsylvania and remote jobs, so you can work for these jobs if you're a Pennsylvanian.
