Working on deep-tech problems, especially in robotics, as private companies or startups in India is both exciting and daunting. The long gestation periods of technology development present a unique challenge—a double-edged sword. On one side, the prolonged timeline can make us vulnerable to losing out to imported technologies. On the other, with supportive investors and customers, indigenous development has the potential to outsmart global competition and create breakthroughs that shape the future. But here’s the dilemma: everyone talks about the benefits of fostering an entire industry from scratch—creating jobs, building expertise, and putting India on the global innovation map. Yet, nobody seems to have a clear roadmap for making this vision a reality. How do we accelerate indigenous development? How can we create an ecosystem-driven, collaborative model that shortens the path to IP creation, accelerates technology adoption, and ensures the risk is shared across stakeholders? It’s time we address this collectively. Investors, policymakers, customers, and entrepreneurs must come together to build an environment where deep-tech innovation thrives. This is not just about startups—it’s about shaping industries and securing technological sovereignty. If you’re someone with ideas, experiences, or solutions to this, I’d love to hear your thoughts. I'm excited to share the latest article from our group, authored by Shahzad Yousaf, myself, Rushikesh Kamalapurkar and Omer San. In the paper titled "A gray-box model for unitary air conditioners developed with symbolic regression" we present a new model for use in building energy modeling (BEM, e.g. Energy Plus), building controls, or equipment mapping purposes. The model uses the same inputs as typical equipment models in BEM and can be trained with as little as 5 experimental data points, which is a major advantage compared to statical models. Hi LinkedIn ! Wanted to share this update from NoPo Nanotechnologies , regarding the development of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and the scaling of it. This innovation is a game-changer, particularly in the realms of EV batteries and semiconductor design. In an era where generative AI is on the rise and the demand for advanced energy solutions is growing, the role of material science becomes ever more crucial. I often refer to this as the dawn of the 'Carbon Age.' It’s a time when the true economic value of new technologies will be unlocked through advancements in materials. The potential of SWCNTs to improve energy density in batteries and provide tight band gap control for electronics is a high value use case. This progress highlights the significant impact that innovative materials can have on the creation of new products and solutions which are often required to solve the new age problems. Congrats and wishing the very best to my brother Gadhadar Reddy and their company NoPo Nanotechnologies for their future milestones. I am personally excited to see how advancements in material science are paving the way for future technological and economic breakthroughs, maybe one day I will be using a GPU made with these SWCNT. We published our new article in IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. https://lnkd.in/gEGCctEK In this study, we elucidate the heterogeneity in individual purchasing decisions toward electric vehicles (EVs). To achieve this, a stated preference experiment among Indian consumers regarding EV adoption was conducted, utilizing a two-stage integrated choice and latent variable model. Neo-classical and lifestyle theory are employed to examine consumers' purchasing decisions. The findings indicate that consumers place more emphasis on the purchase price of EVs rather than the annual savings accrued from EV usage. Additionally, it is observed that risk-averse behavior is negatively correlated, while social influence is positively associated with the consumer's likelihood towards EVs. Consumers are categorized into three segments: “conservative,” “indifferent,” and “enthusiast,” to explain the heterogeneity in their preferences based on charging station availability, annual usage, and household income. The study reveals that consumers in regions with fewer charging stations or those with low vehicle usage are more risk-averse compared to those in regions with a higher density of charging stations or higher vehicle usage. Regarding demographics, younger consumers and those with prior car experience are more inclined to adopt EVs. This study provides valuable insights that could assist governments and policymakers in formulating strategies to facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles. I'm pleased to share our latest open-access publication, "Physics-Based Reliability Modeling for Control Applications: Adaptive Control Allocation," in IEEE Access. https://lnkd.in/g-VjD-Tx This work presents a systematic approach to integrating physics-based reliability models within control systems. By addressing the limitations of conventional degradation models, we introduce a reliability framework that utilizes stress-derived variables, enabling real-time, physics-informed reliability assessments. Our approach is validated through simulations on a hexarotor UAV, demonstrating improved reliability predictions and adaptive workload distribution to extend system longevity. One of my co-authored review articles in "Progress in Materials Science Journal" has reached over 450 citations. This review article provides an overview of how the heterogeneous microstructure influences the mechanical properties of emerging high-entropy alloys. For many years, addressing the strength-ductility trade-off has been a primary focus in developing new alloys for structural applications. As these properties are mutually exclusive, enhancing both strength and ductility is a challenging task. One approach to achieving this is inducing strengthening and strain hardening ability through heterogeneous deformation in a heterogeneous microstructure. Happy to share our recent article entitled "Hybrid AI-based 4D Trajectory Management System for Dense Low Altitude Operations and Urban Air Mobility" published in Aerospace Science and Technology. Our research focuses on advancing low-altitude airspace management for manned/unmanned aircraft operations and Urban Air Mobility (UAM). UAM has emerged as a promising solution to address some of the challenges of transportation congestion and associated environmental impacts, especially in urban and suburban areas. However, the development of UAM and low-altitude Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) services requires advances in traffic management systems and associated regulatory frameworks, capable of addressing simultaneously a large array of safety, efficiency and sustainability requirements. In response to these challenges, our article formulates UAM traffic management as a Demand-Capacity Balancing (DCB) problem and develops a robust UAS Traffic Management (UTM) Decision Support System (DSS) architecture based on innovative AI-based solutions that integrate metaheuristics and machine learning algorithms. Simulation-based verification activities in representative conditions show that the proposed UTM DSS has the ability to effectively resolve overload instances and minimize potential conflicts in low-altitude airspace. We conclude that the proposed solution can support a successful implementation of UAM services in and around large metropolitan areas, and it has the potential to address critical airspace resource constraints also in conventional Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) tasks. Last year, I got invited to contribute a review chapter on Mechanics of Ice to Eleseviers' Comprehensive Mechanics of Materials (https://lnkd.in/gCkFiQyV) Reference work. I am glad to share this review chapter which I worked on putting together with Ravindra Duddu and Haim Waisman. The chapter as we view it, presents an overview of what someone would need to get started on modeling ice as a solid material. We cover a wide range of topics including 1-the basics (microstructure variations, testing and charecterization, strain-rate dependence) 2-mechanical constitutive models (LEFM, continuum damage, phase-field, viscoplastic) 3-applications in two main areas: a) glacier flow, ice shelf, and ice sheet modeling, b) ice and hail impact on engineering structures We also reflect on curent ongoing research, and possible extensions in the future including perspectives on the incorporation of data-science and open-source resources for researchers. Humbled to share our latest research on "High-Resolution Safety Verification for Evasive Obstacle Avoidance in Autonomous Vehicles," now published in the IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology. Our paper introduces a novel functional safety verification method tailored for evasive maneuvers in Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), drawing inspiration from the #ISO26262 Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA) framework. By focusing on critical scenarios such as evasive maneuvers, our approach significantly enhances the resolution of safety assessments, thereby contributing to the advancement of safer and more sustainable autonomous transportation. This research builds upon our patented "Safe Agile Hazard Avoidance System for Autonomous Vehicles" (US20240001964A1), which revolutionizes agile safety responses in real-world AV applications. Hello everyone, A little update on the ongoing work in our research group at IIT Indore: 1. Our study on acoustically generated pulsating air jet is now published in Internation Journal of Thermal Science. The study explains how to control the amplitude of pulsation at various frequencies when pulsations are induced in the steady flow using acoustic actuator. The propagation of pulsation along the centerline is shown, where the actuation frequency becomes less dominant after the potential core region. The heat transfer was found to be enhanced up to 58% compared to the steady jet. Link: https://lnkd.in/dtfk3-dB 2. Previously, we numerically investigated the flow and heat transfer characteristics of pulsating jet impinging on a dimpled surface. Where we found that selection of pulsation frequency and nozzle-to-surface distance is driving factor in optimizing heat transfer performance. In other work led by Rajat Kumar, we delve into the flow physics behind the heat transfer improvement in multi-orifice synthetic jet. In a study led by Dr. Pawan Sharma, we investigate the interesting behavior observed in synthetic jets. Due to the resonance frequency of the acoustic actuator, we obtain same Reynolds number on either side of the resonance frequency. Thus, the Reynolds number at relatively lower and higher frequency is expected to have distinct flow characteristics. Based on the dominance of these frequencies on the heat transfer separate regions have been defined for optimum heat transfer.
