The secret to successful AI implementations? Worker voice When stakeholders become more involved in generative AI design and implementation, it’s more likely that such tools will augment work rather than displace workers. As organizations begin to understand the capabilities and effects of generative artificial intelligence, a group of MIT experts hopes a new framework for technology design and implementation will inspire leaders to include worker voice in their decision-making. In a new paper, “Bringing Worker Voice Into Generative AI,” the researchers explain that generative AI is “well-suited to bottom-up development and use.” They also contend that the more that stakeholders are involved in defining the problems and opportunities the technology can address, “the more likely it is that these tools will be used to augment how workers do their jobs rather than displace them.” The paper was written by Thomas A. Kochan, Ben Armstrong, Julie Shah, Emilio J. Castilla, Ben Likis, and Martha E. Mangelsdorf, all of MIT. It draws on more than 50 interviews with academics, business managers, AI experts, and labor leaders and is also guided by the researchers’ earlier work. “I know from prior work that I’ve done in automation and robotics, the most successful applications of automation were those where the engineers were working side by side with those on the shop floor or those with the domain expertise,” said Shah, professor and department head at the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, in an interview. “The opportunity here is to follow that same playbook so that generative AI can have the positive outcomes that we hope it will have.” Here’s a closer look at the four stages of technology design and implementation where leaders should solicit input from their workers. https://lnkd.in/dPdYanTW By Meredith Somers

Brilliant piece by Marty Swant at Digiday on how NVIDIA and Accenture are collaborating to scale #AIAgents for #enterprises through the creation of the Nvidia Accenture Business Group, which aims to train over 30,000 human employees on Nvidia's full tech stack. What makes this truly exciting is the real-world 'measurable' impact these agents are already having. Jill Kramer, CMO at Accenture shared how #AIAgents have significantly transformed her department, reducing the steps in their workflows from 135 to 85. Jill described the shift perfectly: “Somebody described it to me as thinking about you’re running this track, but you keep having to make a pit stop. Research team, pull that data. Analytics team, pull those reports…Depending on the busy-ness of those other teams, you’d get something back in a day, a week, a month, then you’d have to integrate it. Now, [agents] bring it all back to you and they help you integrate it.” This isn’t just incremental change—it’s transformative efficiency. Adding to this, Justin Boitano, VP of Enterprise AI at NVIDIA, highlighted a key mindset shift required for scaling AI agents: “People realize we’ve got to treat these not just as AI models that magically do everything, but to treat them like employees that we onboard into our company. We basically prompt them to do the right thing for a certain business function, we guardrail them to make sure they do a specific job, we evaluate them in doing that job. There’s a process there.” This paradigm shift—from seeing AI as tools to treating them as integral, trainable "employees"—is what makes the potential of AI agents so extraordinary. It’s not just about automating tasks but redefining how businesses operate, integrate, and grow. I heard two recent quotes from Microsoft and NVIDIA CEOs last week and it made me reflect on the likely role and landscape for the CIO and IT function in the next 5 years? Jensen Huang – CEO, NVIDIA: “Your IT Department is going to become kinda like IT Agent HR” Satya Nadella – CEO, Microsoft: “The business logic [currently in SaaS platforms] is all going to these AI agents. They’re not going to discriminate between what the backend is - they’ll update multiple databases, and all the logic will be in the AI tier.” If you apply and combine these perspectives I see this as adding to and tweaking the things that technology functions will do, not fundamentally changing them. See below for why… Many organisations will probably still have pockets of on-premise infrastructure to run and maintain, they will still have a number of core business platforms, mostly cloud-based. Maybe some of those will have their own AI agents, maybe some will be stripped back to their core databases as Nadella predicts. That would still require CIOs and their teams to: - Manage relationships with the business to give them what they need - Develop and own architectural and data roadmaps, with added focus on AI - Own, deliver and support service management activities and delivery toolsets (e.g. ITSM, CI/CD and DevSecOps) with added focus on AI tools as part of this ecosystem. - Orchestrate the effective sourcing and management of suppliers, with additional AI offerings. - Orchestrate the skills and resources required to augment business capabilities (in product teams) and also to deliver the evolving capabilities they require within IT. It might also mean they do more to: - Provide guardrails and support the business in buying and run its own AI agents, in the same way that a wave of governance followed the proliferation and ubiquity of cloud. - Provide greater leadership on architecture and roadmaps (including data and AI) given the increasing blur between applications, integration/middleware and databases - Manage the risks that these shifts present through increasingly complex service management arrangements and heightened cyber risk So, if you look at the two lists above, it covers many of the key facets most CIOs would say they do today - BRM, Architecture, Change/Transition, Service Management, Sourcing, Risk Management, Governance and People . So in some ways different, but in some, just the same? What do you think? New study deep dives into real-life application of #AI & #GenAI and the business opportunity this creates. Microsoft and IDC just released this years' analysis from interviews with over 4'000 business leaders and AI decision makers worldwide. Companies globally are investing $246 billion in #ArtificialIntelligence in 2024 and #GenerativeAI adoption is a key priority within this. GenAI usage jumped from 55% in 2023 to 74% in 2024; with a 3.7x average return for every dollar invested this level of adoption is perhaps unsurprising. Looking deeper into AI & GenAI adoption, these are the key five trends to be aware of: ➊ Enhanced productivity has become table stakes. Employee productivity is the No. 1 business outcome companies aiming for with AI. The study shows 92% of AI users are using AI for productivity, and 43% say productivity use cases have provided the greatest ROI ➋ Companies are gravitating to more advanced AI solutions. In the next 24 months, more companies expect to build custom AI solutions tailored directly to industry needs and business processes, incl. custom copilots and AI agents ➌ Generative AI adoption and value is growing across industries. Even though it is relatively new to the market, generative AI adoption is rapidly expanding. Across industries, #FinancialServices is leading in ROI as #Banks and #Insurers realise a 4.2x average return, followed by #Telco & #Media (3.9x) while #Healthcare and #Education are realising "only" 3.3x and 3.2x returns respectively ➍ AI leaders are seeing greater returns and accelerated innovation. While companies using generative AI are averaging 3.7x ROI, top leaders using GenAI are realizing significantly higher returns, with an average ROI of 10.3x. Moreover, leaders are also on an accelerated path to build and implement new solutions, 29% of leaders implement AI in less than 3 months versus 6% of companies in the laggard category ➎ Looking ahead: Skilling remains a top challenge. 30% of respondents indicated a lack of specialized AI skills in-house, and 26% say they lack employees with the skills needed to learn and work with AI.
