Climate Capital Guidebook: The Biden-Harris Administration is releasing a new Climate Capital Guidebook to provide a simple, comprehensive map of capital programs across the federal government that are available to climate-related start-ups, small- and medium-sized businesses, and their investors. Grid Reliability Impacts of EV Charging-Two Important Initiatives-Call for Engagement Several years ago, with the support of EnerTech Capital, the California Mobility Center, North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), WECC and other organizations, I was fortunate to be involved in helping to form and manage a working group focused on increasing cross sector collaboration to better understand and mitigate potential adverse impacts of EV charging. In April 2022, a CMC working group published a paper including a number of grid friendly charging recommendations, as well as highlighted the need for more robust technical collaboration between the electric industry and EV OEMs and real-world data to both support and build on recommendations regarding grid friendly charging behaviors. I'm highlighting two recent initiatives and encouraging ongoing technical engagement and support from experts in utility, automotive, communications, software, consulting, and related fields. NERC is proposing to stand up an electric vehicle task force under its industry led Reliability Security Technical Committee. The task force deliverables over 2 years include reports regarding bulk power system reliability risks, a technical report on EV charging states and type tests, improvements in EV charging load modeling, and recommendations regarding interconnection requirements. For more information contact [email protected] or [email protected] In addition, the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute recently made available a paper entitled “Exploratory Pilot: Analyzing Grid and EV Interactions Through Measuring Driving Behavior, Charging Behavior and Electricity.”  James Sayer and Eric Wingfield led the work for UMTRI, together with Taylor Spalt from Utilidata. The pilot monitored ten vehicles for operational data over 86 days at 8 public charging locations outfitted with Utilidata’s meter adapters. Among the observations was that during specific charging events, EVs generated increased power loss, contributed to voltage loss, and created unfriendly grid responses among other effects. Further research is recommended to support the assessment of potential broader grid impacts, as well as improve modeling. These observations are consistent with the findings contained in the CMC working group report. The paper also included observations regarding charging behaviors and impacts. Continued stakeholder supported research by UMTRI is critical and can help inform the NERC EV Task Force initiative. Please reach out to Eric Wingfiled at UMTRI for a copy of the paper. Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom gave a shoutout to BEAM Circular and the huge potential of the bioeconomy at the California Economic Summit hosted by California Forward. He highlighted the initiative's rapid progress and called out the bioeconomy as California’s next trillion-dollar industry. In a surreal moment, he referenced HawkTower’s 10-year venture commitment to this space. I participated in the rise of the app/smartphone economy in the 2010s ... this feels similar. 📲 Currently, ag by-products and the bioeconomy are turning leftover almond shells and rice straw into energy (biofuels) and converting crop residues into natural soil enhancers to grow healthier crops. Soon, we can expect biomanufacturing and bio-based innovation to produce everything from medicines to new proteins, and other high-value materials, like construction materials. We’re humbled and excited to be part of this journey. I learn something new and meet incredible, dedicated Californians every day. In the latest Carbon Brief newsletter, the team highlights a recent study from #NatureClimateChange that reminds us of the six components of feasibility that could inhibit the world’s ability to limit #warming to #1.5C, according to the IPCC's special report on 1.5C. They are: 1) #Geophysical: What global emission pathways could be consistent with conditions of a 1.5°C warmer world? What are the physical potentials for adaptation? 2) #Environmental-#ecological: What are the #ecosystemservices and resources, including #geological storage capacity and related rate of needed #landusechange, available to promote transformations, and to what extent are they compatible with enhanced #resilience? 3) #Technological: What #technologies are available to support transformation? 4) #Economic: What economic conditions could support transformation? 5) #Socio-#cultural: What conditions could support transformations in #behaviour and lifestyles? To what extent are the transformations socially acceptable and consistent with #equity? 6) #Institutional: What institutional conditions are in place to support transformations, including multi-level #governance, institutional capacity, and #political support? In the analysis, it is noted that "The future warming pathways used by the IPCC suggest that holding warming to 1.5C is unlikely, but still possible, when considering the technological feasibility and project-level economic costs of reaching net-zero emissions. However, the new study, published in Nature Climate Change, warns that adding in political and institutional constraints on mitigation make limiting warming to 1.5C even more challenging. Community solar is likely 'dead on arrival' in California. After a 2022 law opening California to community solar, regulators adopted a plan that only makes minor changes. It’s possible regulators are favoring utility-scale solar over rooftop and community to better navigate the impending challenges (such as excess solar supply) and build a more financially sustainable grid. #CommunitySolar #ClimateTech #CleanTech #CAISO #Solar

Roughly $275 trillion investment in physical assets from 2021 to 2050, or approximately $9.2 trillion annually - cites a new report by King’s College, London. "In 2023, governments earned $74 billion through Emissions Trading Systems (ETS). Then, there are voluntary carbon markets that trade carbon credits, creating economic opportunities and pushing governments and corporations to invest in low carbon infrastructure and technologies" The challenge is huge, but so is the opportunity (over $1.2Tn / yr for banks). U.S. Government supports high-quality voluntary carbon market :) This morning, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm - released an endorsement of the voluntary carbon market. It came alongside a set of principles adopted from the VCMI (Voluntary Carbon Market Integrity Initiative). Principles for Responsible Participation”, namely: ➡ Focus on High-Quality Credits ➡ Permanence ➡ Robust Monitoring, Reporting, Verification, and Validation (MMRV) ➡ Co-Benefits ➡ Emissions Reduction Priority This positive endorsement of the VCM is a strong signal that the VCM is here to stay. It acknowledges past issues and provides a clear, government-backed, path for how we should adopt and build out the VCM to protect and regenerate global biodiversity. Data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) illustrates the current "readiness" of #ClimateTechs + their potential impact on carbon reduction. As shown, many techs are at an early stage of being able to have a material impact. Concerningly, some tech funds recently returned capital back to investors recently + closed their funds - citing inability to fund capital intensive techs, found in areas like ClimateTech. This in part may be contributing to the $2 trillion shortfall in ClimateTech, that Deloitte estimates. What this may mean for the future? - The migration of LPs to global, super VC funds within ClimateTech, given the large capital pools needed to fund tech development - Greater specialization from smaller funds, energizing more niche elements of the ClimateTech market - but also altering their / LP's risk profile - A greater role to be played by debt financing in funding growth entities at an earlier stage - impacting cashflow dynamics Will be an interesting space to watch moving forward. Good-sized rounds are going to companies with a variety of focus areas, including installing charging stations, operating charger networks, developing software to optimize usage, and helping EV owners get power from green sources. They’re also spread across every inhabited continent. Using Crunchbase data, we aggregated a sample set of 65 private companies funded in 2023 and 2024 with a focus on EV charging. Collectively, they’ve raised over $4.9 billion in equity funding to date, including both venture and grant funding. #EVcharging #climatetech #climateVC

The US emerged as the top climate-tech financing market in 2024, with $6.7 billion mobilized in the first half of the year. Most of this financing was for clean power companies — renewable energy equipment makers and project developers — as well as startups along the energy storage value chain. Climate-tech companies from mainland China raised $5.1 billion in the same period. Canada placed third with $1.8 billion. #climatetech #climatefinance #climateVC
