What is TechMed? Alan Cohen describes TechMed as an evolution of Medtech, not something entirely new but a refinement that starts with a technology-first focus. He uses the term "speciation event" from biology to explain how TechMed is emerging out of Medtech, similar to how a new species develops from an existing one. TechMed combines both new and existing technologies, including sensors, computer vision, machine learning, and large proprietary datasets. What distinguishes TechMed is its approach: it begins with the technology itself and then considers its application to medicine, rather than starting with a medical problem and searching for the technology to solve it. This tech-driven approach contrasts with traditional methods in Medtech. AI is everywhere in healthcare right now, but are we expecting too much, too soon? As articulated in this recent Forbes article by Spencer Dorn, while AI holds tremendous promise, the real gains will come from thoughtful, measured integration. For those of us focused on shaping leadership teams in healthcare, it’s a reminder that innovation needs to be balanced with practicality. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Prioritize evidence, not hype: AI is not a cure-all. Leaders need to pilot AI solutions carefully and make sure they’re backed by solid evidence. Are you integrating tools that truly enhance your ability to provide care, or are you chasing the next big thing? 2️⃣ Fix the system first: AI can help streamline processes, but it won’t fix underlying inefficiencies. Leaders need to take a systems approach—optimizing workflows and addressing bottlenecks before investing heavily in automation. 3️⃣ Look for small wins: Instead of waiting for the “AI revolution,” focus on the incremental gains AI can offer today—whether it’s reducing the administrative burden on clinicians or enhancing patient engagement. It’s the small steps that can create lasting impact. Michael Seibel makes a great point about facing your fear.   For MedTech founders and CEOs, patient safety comes first!   A product in healthcare holds higher quality standards, which need to be maintained from the get-go while building your startup.   Here are some tips on taking the challenges head-on:   ✅ Prioritize user feedback: Engage healthcare professionals early during the development phase.   ✅ Engage with potential customers: These conversations provide crucial market insights.   ✅ Tackle complex tasks head-on: Deffering challenges to focus on your daily to-do list is not a great idea.   ✅ No shortcuts: Prioritize matters that can impact the safety and efficacy of the product.   ✅ Taking the core design challenges head-on often leads to more robust solutions.   Innovation means you don't have all the answers, but every decision matters, which leads to a safer product. ML/AI LCM may appear overwhelming, but by applying the most fundamental principles of safety engineering, one can connect the dots for focus and comprehensiveness. Here is the safety case structure for AI, with LCM being part of it. These principles align with AAMI TIR38, an extremely valuable yet underutilized standard. The safety of ML/AI technology is supported by: 1. There is reasonable assurance that ML/AI technology does what it is supposed to do: • Intended use, intended benefits, context of use, and system boundaries must be adequately documented. • Specifications (e.g., data, model) for the intended use must be defined, adequately verified, validated, and continuously monitored, controlled, and maintained. 2. There is reasonable assurance that ML/AI technology does no harm: • The risk management process (including cybersecurity) must ensure that potential risks, including risks of misuse, are identified. • Risk control measures (including security control measures) must be adequately established (identified, implemented, and verified). 3. There is reasonable assurance that ML/AI technology reliably does what it is supposed to do and does no harm: • ML/AI model reliability specifications (e.g., False Negative Rate, False Positive Rate) must be defined and adequately justified for the risks (and benefits) associated with the technology. • The reliability specifications must be adequately verified, monitored, and maintained. • There is reasonable assurance that an adequate life cycle process has been established to ensure the quality and reliability of the technology. Try to apply the same principles to other emerging technologies, and let me know if it makes sense.
