Dynamic dApps in Private 5G O-RAN: Microsoft Janus Project and LLMs ◼ Challenges of Existing O-RAN RIC: O-RAN ALLIANCE RIC provides programmability for RAN management and monitoring, but current standards are constrained due to latency requirements (>10ms). Telemetry and control functions are limited to predefined service models. Meanwhile, real-time control challenges arise in private 5G RAN, often as tight as a few milliseconds in many private 5G use cases, such as smart factories and AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles). ◼ MS Project Janus Concept: Janus is a fully programmable monitoring and control system for 5G RAN that allows third parties to load "codelets" (small programs) into RAN functions safely and dynamically. Built on eBPF (extended Berkeley Packet Filter), Janus permits inline execution of codelets within RAN functions in a verifiably safe manner and injects hooks into different layers of RAN for telemetry collection and control. In this way, Janus offers a level of programmability and customization not typically available in traditional RAN architectures. ◼ eBPF Codelets as Real-Time dApps in Private 5G O-RAN In private 5G O-RAN, eBPF codelets act as real-time decentralized applications (dApps) that can optimize network functions dynamically. This approach makes sense for private 5G networks because of: - Customization: Enterprises often have unique traffic patterns and security requirements that off-the-shelf solutions cannot address. Codelets can be tailored to specific applications, prioritizing different network slices for industrial IoT, remote control, and augmented reality. - Low-Latency Operations: eBPF codelets run inline within the RAN, avoiding latency issues associated with traversing between user and kernel spaces. This ensures that real-time decisions can be made in microseconds, crucial for time-sensitive applications like autonomated guided vehicles (AGVs). ◼ Auto dApp Generation with LLM Generating these codelets manually requires specialized expertise. To simplify this process, Project Janus can leverage a Large Language Model (LLM) for automatic dApp generation. For example, a pre-trained LLM (like GPT-4) is fine-tuned with eBPF codelet datasets to understand networking requirements and translate user requests into eBPF bytecode automatically. ◼ Challenges - Complexity: Developing eBPF programs requires knowledge of kernel internals, specific libraries, and the constraints of the eBPF virtual machine. - Verification Limitations: The verifier imposes strict limitations on loops and certain operations. - Compatibility Issues: eBPF programs are sensitive to kernel versions. - Runtime Control: Challenges in predicting worst-case execution times. - Standardization in O-RAN Alliance Microsoft Capgemini Intel Corporation Juniper Networks Mavenir did a great Janus project joint demo at the RIC Forum. #ORAN #OpenRAN #ORANRIC #ProjectJanus #E2SM #DynamicServiceModel #PrivateORAN #Private5G #eBPF #Codelet #dApps

We continue to implement #JioBrain #AI in the heart of the 5G network. Traditional OSS implementations enable operations engineers to “track”, “monitor” and “visualise” KPIs. However, with JioBrain, we have trained the entire 3GPP specifications knowledge base in addition to network-specific counters, to create an entire LLM driven experience for operations. Operations engineers can now do the following in addition to trending / reporting and visualisation: (1) Understand the KPI impact on customer experience and Net Promotor Score. (2) Link the specific KPI with 5G network 3GPP procedures to better understand the call flow which impacted the KPI. (3) Understand how the KPI spans across multiple nodes of the 5G network. (4) Get remedial action recommendations with follow-up LLM prompts. In summary, with #JioBrain, operational staff now have an AI Engineer working alongside them and helping them with quick turn-around.
