hi Aaron, this is indeed a great review for those new to the field and it is also written for those who haven't paid attention to the monitoring space for some time. One area that is not discussed and is understandable, is the difference in aorta derived metrics versus small elastic artery metrics. The presence of CVD in the small vessels can lead to an elevation BP and increase the impact of wave reflections from the periphery. The loss in aortic compliance begins slowly in the early 20's and the Framingham Study papers show how the loss in compliance is quantified with pulse wave velocity. This non-invasively shows that aging is the major factor and CVD adds to and/or multiplies the impact of a loss in aortic compliance. Presently, a tool to quantify the impact of vascular aging on the large and small vessels is not available in hospitals. Indirect insights exist but this could be considered one of big "gets" to be created. Feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss. Larry

Up next, our third poster for the SLEEP 2024 conference, "Multi-center Evaluation of a User Operable EEG Based Automated Sleep Monitor" The Beacon Dreem headband is a novel patient self-applied headband embedded with dry EEG electrodes, capable of providing PSG quality sleep staging using only EEG and accelerometer data as input. This system is designed to meet the need for low-cost EEG-based longitudinal sleep monitoring in the home setting, and achieves this with a subject/patient operable clinical grade EEG measurement device (requiring no sleep lab, gels, or technologist). In a series of prospective studies, Dreem was validated against human expert scored PSG and usability by patients in the home setting. The Dreem system demonstrated high fidelity sleep staging at a fraction of the time and cost of PSG, while allowing for repeat measurements. In eliminating lab visits and technologist setup, Dreem opens the door to longitudinal brain state assessment and raw EEG data acquisition. These data were used to support the FDA 510(k)-clearance for the Dreem system in the evaluation of disturbed night time sleep. Beacon is actively deploying the FDA 510(k)-cleared Dreem sleep headband in clinical trials with our biopharma partners and beyond. Miranda Lynch at Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute and a team led by collaborator Gregory Babbitt at Rochester Institute of Technology have just published a paper in Biophysical Journal describing ATOMDANCE.     ATOMDANCE is a new user-interfaced suite of machine learning-based tools, designed for investigating comparative molecular dynamics. The software can be used to identify key sites involved in dynamic responses during functional binding interactions involving DNA, small-molecule drugs, and virus-host recognition, as well as understanding shifts in global and local site coordination occurring during allosteric activation of a pathogenic protease.   This is an important tool for the scientific community, helping to open up new pathways in drug studies for multiple diseases, focused on how molecules move.    Read the paper by visiting: https://lnkd.in/gcihHX77

Another excellent paper at #JMXR! Journal of Medical Extended Reality I love this use case for #augmentedreality during #pediatric #anesthesia induction. It is well established that anesthesia induction leads to stress and anxiety in patients, including children. In this study an #AR based game is used to distract kids and increase their #cognitive load during the induction procedure. Although a relatively small-scale pilot study, the results are quite impressive with the AR solution reducing stress and having calming benefits. Simple, yet elegant! cc: Jeffrey I. Dr. Esther Yuh of UCSF Center for Intelligent Imaging & Dr. Emily Lin of UCSF Department of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging developed a semi-supervised learning model that significantly enhances intracranial hemorrhage detection and segmentation. The model achieved higher performance metrics, including a Dice similarity coefficient of 0.829 compared to 0.809 for the baseline model (P = .012). By utilizing a combination of labeled and unlabeled data, this method improves generalizability and accuracy in analyzing CT scans. Central mesh failure is a significant challenge in ventral hernia repair, particularly when synthetic mesh is used. This issue occurs when the mesh weakens, tears, or loses integrity at the center, leading to recurrence of the hernia.
