A key aspect in the transition toward a more resilient grid requires more attention: how the impacts of future climate change intersect with the transformations required to decarbonize the energy system. We looked at this question with NYSERDA, coupling temperature projections under three climate scenarios (mild, moderate, severe) with two infrastructure cases (reflecting varying levels of decarbonization). In a reference case, climate-driven increases in temperatures can place significant additional pressure on summer peak demand, and the challenge of maintaining reliability during heat waves would be compounded by the impacts of rising temperatures on electric infrastructure, including both generator availability and transmission capacity. Investments in building decarbonization, like insulation and efficient heat pump technologies, can help to mitigate the impacts on summer peak demand. Building an energy system that is both clean and resilient is possible, and investments in building decarbonization can even have additional climate resilience benefits. In the C&I space, we tend to hear the same "slow and no" refrain from utilities that SunRun is reporting in residential space in this article at RenewableEnergyWorld. How do we get (or force) utilities to adapt, quickly, to support these decarbonization goals? "Sunrun CEO says utilities’ ‘slow and no’ culture gets in the way of energy innovation “You’re talking about a 100-plus-year-old system and way of thinking, and you compound that with the fact that utilities’ whole culture is built for ‘slow and no’ and ‘protect, preserve, defend.’ For so many years, it’s been a one-way system,” Powell said. Virtual power plants are a prime example of the coming change. Powell said utilities’ experience with energy efficiency in recent decades provides a look at what might be coming for such pairings of solar and storage. Climate data could be the key to staying resilient against extreme weather—but how do we translate such complex data into actionable insights for the energy industry? ⛈️ 📊 Over the past two years, EPRI’s Climate READi and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories have collaborated to present accessible climate data that addresses climate risks such as hurricanes, extreme cold, flooding, and more. Through Climate READi, power companies can make more resilient, climate-informed decisions. Collaborating with seven national labs—including Argonne National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory—EPRI has hosted four region-specific workshops across the U.S. For instance, this past August, EPRI and Brookhaven National Laboratory hosted a workshop in NYC that examined the impacts of storm flooding and clouds on the power system. Discussing the partnership, Morgan M. Scott, Director of Climate READi, emphasized “The labs have strong scientific and regional capabilities. They’re advancing research that can make a big difference globally, nationally, and in the regions where they are located.” The initiative’s efforts will culminate with the publication of the “Climate READi: Power Framework” at Battelle’s Innovations in Climate Resilience conference next spring.
