I recently had the opportunity to dive into the latest developments in intrathecal drug delivery (ITDD) therapy at the Pacific Spine and Pain Society (PSPS) Annual Meeting. Here are some key takeaways that underscore the transformative potential of ITDD for managing both cancer-related and chronic pain: Expanding Role of ITDD: As an alternative when other pain therapies fall short, ITDD has proven to be durable and predictable with regards to outcomes. Experts, including Jason E. Pope, MD, DABPM, FIPP, emphasized broadening ITDD’s role in pain management. Technology Updates: Lawrence Poree, MD discussed Medtronic’s SyncroMed III pump—with upgrades that improve refill workflows and cybersecurity, and the possible resurgence of Prometra pumps following Infusyn Therapeutics’ purchase of substantially all Flowonix assets. 2024 PACC Guideline Insights: New guidelines recommend adjusting treatment if granulomas form with high-dose opioids and considering opioid-bupivacaine combinations to minimize dose escalation. A psychological assessment is also recommended for all non-cancer IDD system patients. Implementation Strategies: Michael Leong, MD shared practical insights on ITDD, stressing the importance of a “start low and go slow” approach for dosing and a strategic, team-based approach for optimal patient outcomes. Additional Treatment Options for Cancer Pain: For cancer patients, treatments like radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and spinal cord stimulation show promise in managing metastasis-related pain and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. Jackie Weisbein, MD highlighted the need for rapid, effective interventions in these cases. As ITDD technology evolves, so do the possibilities for managing complex pain conditions. CDMO Nucleus RadioPharma reveals expansions at two sites that will "significantly improve" market access to promising cancer treatments. 🏗️ The upgrades at sites in Mesa, #Arizona and Springhouse, #Pennsylvania will give each facility research, development and commercial production capabilities, boosting capacity by 200%. The expansions are expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and will create around 100 jobs overall. 💉 The upgrades will allow more patients to receive radiopharmaceuticals, which have a limited shelf-life, according to Nucleus. 💬 "To reach their full potential as treatments for millions of patients with limited options, theranostic radiopharmaceuticals must be available close to those who need them," Nucleus RadioPharma CEO Charles Conroy, RPh, MBA said in a release.
