Yesterday, Tuskira launched with a bang. With a proven founding team (Piyush Sharrma, om moolchandani, Vipul Parmar) and a well-backed investment round (Intel Capital, SYN Ventures, Sorenson Capital...) Tuskira is pursuing a big idea: "Preemptive Security" As an advisor and investor, I often come across innovative concepts, but only a few have the potential to redefine the way we approach cybersecurity. You can read the full story in the attached blog. https://lnkd.in/g-YkQ6xM For my friends in a hurry, TLDR below: Preemptive security has its roots in addressing the inadequacies of traditional Vulnerability Management (VM) and SecOps, both of which have become major time sinks for security teams while offering limited cyber-defense efficacy. In both areas, vast amounts of data are generated: assets, findings, security controls, configurations, and security events. Tuskira's preemptive security approach leverages GenAI to create a security mesh that can effectively contextualize exposure, cyber controls, and security alerts, addressing several key gaps in today's cybersecurity landscape: 1. VM prioritization that overlooks the reality of your environment. The traditional approach to vulnerability management often fails to prioritize based on true security risk. Just because a vulnerability is being exploited in the wild doesn't mean it poses a real threat in your specific environment. 2. Lack of visibility into compensating controls. Without clear awareness of existing security controls, teams may miss opportunities to mitigate exposures effectively, resulting in suboptimal prioritization. 3. Over-reliance on patching as the only mitigation option. Patching is typically slower than attackers' capabilities, and without effective prioritization, it becomes a cumbersome and inefficient process. 4. Limitations in SecOps. Threat intelligence and SOC threat detection often lack context regarding an enterprise's actual exposure and defensive capabilities, leading to inefficiencies and defensive gaps. Tuskira's approach aims to "preempt" exposure and developing attacks by optimizing what you remediate and detect, how you remediate and detect, and how you deploy and configure your security controls. The goal is to prevent cyber risks and stop developing exploits before they become threats within your specific environment. Too good to be true? You should be the judge. In my final blog of the year on 𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, I reflect on what matters most: prioritizing risk over tasks. While industry discussions emphasize executing work processes like asset inventory, network segmentation, patch management, and employee training, there is little focus on 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. Given limited resources, unexpected outages, and the need for sustainable operations, it's essential to shift the narrative from 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴. A robust security program aims to mitigate risk to an acceptable level. This requires evaluating 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 and 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 to prioritize tasks. For example, addressing a critical vulnerability depends on context: Is the vulnerable system integral to safety or critical to operations? The answer influences whether immediate patching is warranted or can wait for a scheduled outage. Risk-based decision-making ensures resources are directed where they matter most. Work processes like firewall rules, access controls, or whitelisting may sometimes outweigh the need for a patch. By applying a simple risk equation and focusing on priority areas, organizations can optimize efforts, reduce unnecessary workload, and enhance overall security. As Dale Carnegie noted, "An hour of planning can save you 10 hours of doing."
