Fish & Richardson is committed to constantly sharing information across the Firm through numerous formal and informal channels. As our litigators share thoughts about developing case law and legal trends, they inspire one another and help optimize outcomes for our clients. This flow of information and ideas keeps us on the leading edge of the law – and frequently catalyzes unique approaches and strategies that allow us to actually shape the law.

The Fish Litigation Blog invites a broader community to participate in and benefit from the case updates, trends, and information that we talk about internally at Fish.

With the blog we're able to create brand awareness and deeper familiarity with all of our litigation practice groups among a targeted audience, support cross-serving across groups, and generate new business leads and media interest.

The content of our blog reflects the full expanse of our litigation practice. For example, IP litigators address developments in patent and trademark litigation, the intricacies of ITC proceedings, and how courts are handling NPE litigation. Commercial litigators cover employment issues and trade secrets law, complex breach of contract and fraud proceedings in key jurisdictions, and how technology companies are faring in the Delaware Court of Chancery. Our white collar group writes articles on how the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act can impact a company’s IP, developments related to the Economic Espionage Act, and other white collar trends. We also publish Federal Circuit Summaries and articles about Supreme Court IP decisions.

Fish is known for its intellectual property work, but the firm wanted to showcase its lesser-known, but equally formidable, Commercial Litigation practice. The firm engaged Right Hat LLC — a branding and design firm — to develop a marketing communications piece that would help raise the visibility of this high-octane group by leveraging its impressive list of significant wins for high-profile clients in high-profile matters.

It was determined that these wins could be turned into compelling stories that could be packaged and delivered as a brochure that might stand out amid the sea of marketing clutter that regularly inundates C-level targets. The brochure was then conceived and executed to emulate a high-gloss business magazine. The cover consciously mimics such a magazine, as do the articles showcasing F&R’s most interesting — even famous — cases. Indeed, the “magazine” is given the name “CASES,” with a log line that reads “Stories From the Front Lines of Commercial Litigation.”

The brochure — or “magazine” — is designed to be a sharp departure from the usual “case studies” brochure. It uses a combination of stylized illustrations and startling photo portraits to draw the reader in and encourage readership of the stories. The stories themselves are highly readable, featuring high-profile clients — most notably Mark Cuban — in high-stakes litigation. These stories are told in plain English — with no docket numbers, no procedural summaries, and no case law— no legalese whatsoever. The brochure, which has been well received both internally and externally, is designed and written with an audacity and sense of entertainment not often seen in law firm communications.

Our objective was to raise the nationwide awareness — among clients, prospects, laterals, and law firm recruits — of the track record and capabilities of Fish’s team of commercial litigators.

In partnership with Right Hat LLC, we created a marketing piece featuring the group’s most significant wins in recent years, with General Counsel and C-suite contacts at major companies as our target audience.

We chose to tell compelling stories in a language other than legalese. Stories were written with the audience in mind, and packaged to stand out amid the sea of marketing clutter that barrages these executives every day.

The brochure’s design borrows from the conventions of a high-gloss business magazine. The cover consciously mimics such a magazine, as do the articles showcasing Fish’s most interesting — even famous — cases. Other magazine-like features include the “Media Hits” spread consisting of quotes from various media outlets, and a “Cases In Brief” section for matters that tell a shorter story. An inside folder flap is provided for the group’s attorneys to insert their bios.

Designed to stand apart from the usual “case studies” brochure, the cover grabs attention with its magazine-like graphic style — the colorful and quirky illustration framing the name “CASES” and the sub-line “Stories From the Front Lines of Commercial Litigation.” Inside, a combination of stylized illustrations and photo portraits draw the reader in. The stories are unusually accessible, featuring high-profile clients — most notably Mark Cuban — in high-stakes litigation. They are told as stories — in plain English — with no docket numbers, no procedural summaries, no case law.

Fish & Richardson holds Life Sciences Intellectual Property (IP) Summits in markets across the U.S. These events target executives and in-house counsel in the fields mentioned above, and address critical issues at the forefront of these industries.

According to a Law Firm Mobile report, 86% of mobile device users’ time is spent in apps. To provide excellent client service to attendees, Fish created the Life Sciences IP Summit App, available for free on both the Google Play and Apple iTunes stores.

Fish wanted attendees to have Summit information at their fingertips– literally. Those who downloaded the app were able to acquire electronic copies of hard copy paperwork, such as Fish brochures, the Summit agenda, speaker bios, and other materials, which were also handed out to attendees.

The marketing goal was to connect with attendees before and after the event. In order to achieve this, Fish informed attendees of the app when they registered on the website, www.fishlifesciences.com. For the event, app cards were printed and placed on the tables and in various places. Follow-up emails encouraged attendees to view the microsite and download the app after the event.

Fish partnered with Kobilis Design, which previously developed Fish’s award-winning post-grant app. The design of the app mirrors the web content of Fish’s microsite and is updated in real time when materials become available. Under the “Connect” ribbon, users are redirected to practice group blogs, websites, and social media platforms. Under the “Materials” ribbon, users have direct access to brochures that are typically used in pitches and client meetings.

What makes this app different from others is that it allows Fish to showcase its industry expertise and knowledge to promote its attorneys.
