SREE, Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness is hosting a two-part webinar, “An Introduction to Bayesian Impact Analysis,” featuring Howard Bloom, former MDRC Chief Social Scientist, and Pei Zhu, MDRC Senior Research Associate, on October 24 and November 14. The webinars will introduce program evaluators to the basic ideas, intuition, logic, methods, applications, benefits, and limitations of Bayesian impact analysis, an emerging method for integrating a current impact estimate for a specific intervention with prior impact estimates for related interventions and study populations to obtain a more fully informed current impact estimate.

Two new studies highlight the perils of relying on preconceptions of how #shareddecisionmaking #participatorymedicine, #coproduction and #healthcareconsumerism should work. In the first, researchers in Australia presumed that giving #TKA (otherwise known as "total knee replacement") patients an #AI driven #Predictivemedicine tool would change their preference for surgery. Nope. My guess is that people in pain don't make decisions based on what the spreadsheet says ("Those patients are so illogical!), but on their hopes and fears. The authors acknowledge that more holistic approach to #patientengagment may be needed. In the second study, a research team that included clinicians, sociologists, economists and others in The Netherlands, People's Republic of China, Germany and Turkey looked at how shared decision-making worked in practice. Fascinating methodology, and a conclusion that what worked in practice for different kinds of patients and clinicians should be accepted as just as much as "best practice" as what theoretically was the best way to go about things. International acceptance of the patient voice, plus real-world wisdom. Progress is slow, but it's coming. "How to Live Longer" - reflecting on a fascinating discussion about the future of healthcare at the #newyorkerfest between Dr. Atul Gawande and Dr. Dhruv Khullar: A few key insights worth sharing: 💡 The future of medicine isn't just about living longer—it's about living better. We're finally recognizing that healthcare should align with patients' life priorities and values, not just survival metrics. 🔍 While maximum lifespan remains stubborn (~120 years), we're getting better at helping more people reach their 80s and 90s with quality of life. Countries like Japan and Korea are leading the way with 85-year average life expectancies. 📊 The power of accessible healthcare is striking: Thailand reduced deaths before age 50 from 60% to just 35% in 20 years by building strong primary care infrastructure and deploying community health volunteers. That's the difference good healthcare systems can make. 🌡️ Climate change is emerging as a major health crisis. From heat-related illnesses to changing disease patterns, our healthcare systems need to adapt quickly. ⚖️ The biggest challenge ahead? Healthcare equity. When our top 1% live to 89 while others barely reach 72, we have work to do. Countries succeeding in this space prioritize accessible primary care and community health workers. A dynamic presentation by AIMI Co-director Nigam Shah and an engaging panel discussion featuring AIMI affiliated faculty Fatima Rodriguez, MD, MPH, and Stanford colleagues Alex Weihan Chu and Michael Pfeffer demonstrated the vital role of AI in health care, and emphasized the importance of using it safely, ethically, and cost-effectively. Drs.
