This is an interesting talk that challenges a basic assumption that more spending in healthcare leads to better outcomes. They defined health value by looking at mortality rates across 6 diaseases and healthcare spending per capital. Florida ranked 3rd and Vermont 46th. While healthcare spending was correlated with lower heart disease it was not correlated with opioid use disorder. This sheds light upon the fact that social determinants of health have a big impact on outcomes. #healthcare #healthspending

Shifting the financial model alone is not sufficient for the transition - the care delivery, workforce, and many other pieces of the ecosystem with which PCPs interact also need to adjust accordingly. Funding to allow for the startup costs of transformation must be made available. A comprehensive analysis from The Commonwealth Fund: To encourage participation, practitioners say upfront payments, investment in the primary care workforce, and less emphasis on simplistic quality measures are needed, as well as more support for practices to provide accessible, comprehensive care. #primarycare #integratedcare #teambasedcare #healthcare #healthcareonlinkedin

Generative AI is transforming healthcare, and we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface. 🚀 I had the opportunity to attend an insightful #HLTH2024 session featuring Daniel Yang, MD, VP of AI and Emerging Technologies at Kaiser Permanente, Parminder Bhatia, Chief AI Officer at GE HealthCare, Bianca Diana Anghelina, Founder of AILY LABS, and Rohan Ramakrishna, MD, Neurosurgeon and Co-Founder of Roon. Here are some standout insights: 🔹 AI to Alleviate the Supply and Demand Problem Dr. Yang emphasized that the traditional 1:1 clinician-to-patient model is not sustainable with the growing demand for healthcare services. "We’re not going to train our way out of this problem." AI is key to augmenting clinicians, moving toward a 1:Many model, empowering patients to self-manage their care with enhanced support. 🔹Unlocking Data to Drive Proactive Care Parminder shared that 90% of health data remains untapped. With AI, we can unlock this data to move from reactive to proactive care, improving patient outcomes and making healthcare more efficient. 🔹 Integration is Key to Success Rohan Ramakrishna emphasized the need for AI to seamlessly integrate into clinical workflows, using EHR in-basket management as an example. This AI tool has allowed providers to refocus attention on the patient, strengthening trust in the care process. 🔹 Trust in AI is Critical Trust also continues to be a recurring theme. As Daniel Yang said, "Explainability is a proxy for trust—if we understand how AI works, we trust it." Transparency, particularly in clinical settings, is crucial to earning patient trust. Rohan Ramakrishna echoed this by stating that radical transparency is a must when deploying AI in healthcare. This is GREAT news... if you're a #hospital. Yeah mergers potentially save costs for hospitals but at what "cost" to patients? Price increases ranging from 6% to 30% in concentrated markets that don't even improve the quality of care?? I understand that mergers may be seen as a lifeline to avoid closure & significant service cuts. However, acquisition by larger systems lead to a focus on more profitable services, sidelining essential care like primary care & maternity services in smaller communities. #HealthcareInnovation #PatientVoice #HealthcareAdvocacy

I’ve been given advice that the fastest way to monetize HER Heard without charging the end user (woman) is trackers and selling data. Instead, I’d like to build something more trustworthy. I don’t want to be in a headline like this. If you are not paying, then you are the product (you/your data are being sold). There are newer ways to deindentify data or even to aggregate things women search for that can be of interest to various stakeholders. In theory that could be okay to sell, but in a post-Roe world with laws encouraging bounty hunting, I am vetting the choices ahead. I am all for moving fast, without breaking things.

Healthcare remains one of the most change-resistant industries, uniquely distinguished by its negative per-capita productivity growth and continued reliance on fax machines. This week, I had the privilege of joining leaders from CVS, Amazon, NVIDIA, and Oracle through the Frist Cressey Ventures team to discuss reimagining healthcare with patients at the center. It's encouraging to see major corporations taking a long-term, patient-centric approach to healthcare transformation, questioning fundamental assumptions about our current system. However, the challenges are real. Forward, despite raising hundreds of millions and bringing fresh "outside healthcare" perspectives to reimagine primary care, recently shut down due to unsustainable economics. They're not alone - 2024 has seen major retailers like Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, and Dollar General either exit or scale back their physical healthcare presence. In conversations with healthcare leaders, there's growing excitement about Generative AI's potential to drive change. Yet, the industry's complexity demands both optimism and humility. Transforming healthcare requires not just innovative technology, but a deep understanding of its unique challenges. I'm happy to see the U.S. #PreventiveServicesTaskForce recommend this. World Health Organization recommendations are rather complex. #BreatCancer kills >500,000 #women each year. In resource–poor settings, most #women with #BreastCancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage of disease, and their 5-year survival rates are low (10% – 40%).  In settings where early detection and basic treatment are accessible, the 5-year survival rate for early localized #BreastCancer is >80%. How can we build the right infrastructure to support remote patient monitoring (RPM) for all kinds of patients in all kinds of settings? Check out this new paper in NEJM Catalyst by recent medical school graduate, Nina Singh, MD on why and how to create the core capabilities within a health system , taking a different, more scalable approach -- "the focus is on building tools and workflows for practices that are interested in using RPM rather than on building centralized RPM programs for specific high-need populations." Practical tips include a #playbook for RPM and much more: "Exploratory features include a playbook detailing best practices for RPM use across NYULH, a device loaner program, direct Bluetooth pairing (as opposed to Bluetooth syncing and transmission of data through data aggregator pathways), systematic offboarding workflows for inactive or stable patients, and small centralized programs being developed among groups of practices with similar patient populations and needs (e.g., primary care faculty group practices managing hypertension).
