Open-source models can be a strong lever for increasing gross margins at AI companies, especially those that have hefty cost structures (e.g., enterprise sales orgs that require significant customer success or implementation resources, as well forward-deployed AI services models common in healthcare and life sciences). Board of Directors - insights from "The Essays of Warren Buffett" Buffett’s principles for Boards of Directors emphasize the importance of independence, accountability, and a focus on long-term shareholder value: - Long-Term Focus: Boards should act in the long-term interest of shareholders - Board Composition: Boards with mostly outside directors and select members for business savvy, not prominence or diversity (PE insight: CROs on the Board) - Regular Evaluation: Outside directors should meet without the CEO to assess performance True Independence: Directors must have equity in the company to align with shareholders' interests P.S. Startup Lesson: Humour is an essential skill. Funny people in your team lift performance. There has almost never been a time when humour hasn't helped me in almost all aspects of my life. Dating, Marriage, and work. For example if you have to give someone bad feedback because they messed up a project massively consider these two approaches: 1. Simon, your performance on that project was really below standard. You did x, y and z really badly and the results were far below what we needed. Or 2. Dude.... that project... do you want to kick yourself in the nuts for it or do you want me to do it? Simon knows he messed up, you don't need to tell him or make him relive it. You need to let him know you know he messed up and expect more; but you spare his feelings a little, and make him feel part of the team with a little humour. Below is a video of Jerry Seinfeld's address to Duke University graduates. There is much gold in there. I 100% agree with his first point on privilege. The quote below about humour is from minute 4:40. "Do not lose your sense of humour, you can have no idea in this point in your life how much you are going to need it to get through. Not enough of life makes sense for you to be able to survive it without humour" "It is worth the sacrifice of an occasional discomfort to have some laughs... humour is the most powerful, most survival essential quality you will ever have or need to navigate through the human experience" I have seen this. In any high performing team you need it. Doing difficult things like when we went from Sydney to Hobart in a small boat in a storm for 5 days. In the difficult times of a startup you need it. I won't work with someone who doesn't have a sense of humour. You can't. Someone once said to me in a whatsapp group: "is everything a joke to you". I replied yes. Everything is. There is not one thing that you can't make a joke about. You have to because if you can't laugh at some of whats happening then what can you do? Side note to young entrepreneurs. When someone successful and wise like Jerry Seinfeld (who is 70 years old) talks. You should listen. Benefit from his rich life and experience. His words are a gift. You don't have to agree with him. To many of us in the world of startups – or extreme endurance events for that matter – there is a continuing desire to explore any new intervention that can enhance our personal or professional lives. We devour books, articles, podcasts and TED Talks on things like habit, grit, happiness, fitness, meditation, morning routines, etc. - always keen to find another tool to accelerate our personal growth and effectiveness. But so many behavioral changes will not benefit us in the short term. That can be particularly true for nutrition and exercise. These can be challenging to tackle and weeks or even months into a new routine, there will be little indication that anything positive is happening. That, in turn, can cause us to give up on something that could have made a meaningful difference in our long-term health and well-being. I believe that the “Slight Edge” concept can be of critical assistance in sustaining progress. First articulated in a book by Jeff Olson, the “Slight Edge” argues that to improve or grow in any area of our lives, it is important to first recognize that there are no quick fixes. Instead, seemingly small actions executed more or less daily will yield enormous benefits months and especially years down the road. One of the author’s favorite illustrations of the slight edge concept – and one in which the effect can be objectively validated – is reading 10 pages a night of a useful book. Done faithfully, this will translate into 15-20 good books read each year. The slight edge framing applies nicely to healthy eating and regular exercise. Saying no – or yes, for that matter – to a calorie rich dessert or a workout, a single time, makes no difference in the larger scheme of things. But repeating that decision consistently, over a period of years, will have an enormous impact. That impact can be either profoundly positive or negative, depending on the direction in which you are making the slight edge work for you. The” Slight Edge” concept has strong application to the world of endurance sports. Faithful adherence to a structured training plan can reliably take a healthy person from the couch to a 10K. Longer term plans can then take you to the half-marathon and beyond. A similar progression will also work for triathlons. In each case, it is faithful execution on a daily basis, repeated over time, that drives increasingly dramatic progress. More than a decade after adopting a largely vegan diet and 14 years after taking up endurance sports – I have seen the dramatic impact that seemingly small daily actions can have.   Whether we like it or not, the slight edge is always working in our lives. I believe the key is to recognize that fact and to consciously think about how to make it work for you, rather than against you. #mondaymotivation #leadershipdevelopment #personaldevelopment

Rethinking prospect theory – is perceived loss aversion really about risk preferences, or just a response to how we process complexity? Great paper by Ryan Oprea in American Economic Review presents empirical evidence that challenges our understanding of decision-making under risk, with significant implications for organizational decision processes. The study's innovative design compared two types of choices. First, traditional lotteries were presented as "100 boxes" where, for example, 90 boxes contained $25 and 10 boxes contained $0, with one box randomly selected for payment (creating a 90% chance of winning $25). Then, for comparison, they created "deterministic mirrors" of these lotteries - identical scenarios using the same 100-box description, but instead of randomly selecting one box, participants received the sum of all boxes divided by 100 (effectively the expected value). So while a lottery might offer a 90% chance of $25, its mirror paid $22.50 (90 × $25/100) with certainty. Crucially, the mirrors preserved the computational complexity of the original lotteries while removing all risk. The data from 673 participants showed nearly identical behavioral patterns between risky and risk-free scenarios. The classic "fourfold pattern" of risk attitudes appeared in both conditions with 97% similar strength. For example, when evaluating high-probability gains (90 boxes with $25, 10 with $0), subjects showed apparent risk aversion in both lottery and mirror conditions. The study found that 82% of subjects exhibited these patterns even without risk, while only 14% showed patterns consistent with pure risk preferences. Across subjects, the severity of these behaviors in risk-free scenarios strongly predicted their appearance in actual lotteries. In short, removing the risk in exchange for certainty while preserving complexity, led to the same exact pattern of decision making… These findings have practical implications for organizational decision-making. Current frameworks for strategic decisions often assume executives and employees have specific risk preferences that need to be managed. However, if similar behavioral patterns emerge in both risky and risk-free scenarios, the challenge may lie more in how people process complex information rather than their attitudes toward risk. When presenting options to boards or teams, focus on reducing computational complexity rather than just clarifying risk levels. The data suggests that when people appear risk-averse, they might actually be struggling with the cognitive load of evaluating multiple possible outcomes. I was surfing my notes taken during my time at MIT Sloan School of Management and I was surprised pleasantly by one class which was more fun than a serious lecture. It was called leadership seminar. It was taught to us by a Senior McKinsey Partner Vijay D'Silva . In every class there was one American CEO coming in person. Some of them failed as CEO , some of them retired as great CEOs and some of them were current CEOs. And I think Prof. deliberately ensured that all of them were not founder CEOs. While during the class I always kept on wondering and trying to get pattern from their sucess of failure. At the end I concluded that their was no pattern but the lessons to be learnt as a leader and manage your career with clear learnings from those lessons. I think for those of you wondering what are those lessons, I will keep it for some other day... You can do better networking but definitely it will not make you a successful leader or CEO . yes it can help you land into a starting hanky panky role .. you can try to lead larger teams and get good visibility but will it make you a successful leader ? .. possibly not .. You can remain as a polite leader who does trust his team .. Does it ensure sucess? possibly not... So what are the lessons for sucess in a Career , I am surprised that I just deduced it to just two heads..
