Thanks to everyone that came to see my talk at ServerlessDays ANZ yesterday! Here are the slides. For those that missed it, here are the main lessons I shared: ✨ LLMs are not magic, they're just another useful tool in a builder's toolkit ✨If you want to be build with LLMs quickly and cheaply, see how far you can go with prompts and RAG. ✨If you need more control than you can achieve with those, you'll likely need to do fine-tuning, tuning or even training, all of which are much more expensive comparably. ✨Plan for your models to change all the time - use Artificial Analysis to navigate the changes ✨Plan for your prompts - version your prompts and construct them independently of inference ✨Getting LLMs to behave consistently for your use case is super challenging, but there are tools like the Seed and Temperature features to help ✨Hacking LLMs to behave outside the intended behaviour is easy, but you can architect around this using techniques like prompt proxies (thanks to Tomasz Tunguz for sharing great design patterns) If you have any questions about building using these tools, feel free to reach out!

SMSA produced this After Open report at 10am EST this morning. Of course it's not going to save you from a down day like today...only a crystal ball and bets placed night before would avoid today's losses. But if you're quasi connected to the market, yet invested, this report would have given a good breakdown: "After the opening bell on August 5, 2024, major U.S. stock indices faced significant declines. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) dropped to 39,056.19, showing a decrease of 1.71%. The S&P 500 Index (INX) fell by 3.65% to 5,151.14, while the Russell 2000 Index (RUT) declined by 4.15% to 2,021.8569. The technology-heavy NASDAQ Composite Index (IXIC) experienced the steepest fall, plunging 6.34% to 15,712.532. On the brighter side, some stocks managed to post gains. Notably, NVD surged by 14.79% to $2.95, GDXD rose 17.44% to $21.75, FNGD appreciated by 14.00% to $32.98, ALAB gained 3.20% to reach $43.74, and BBD increased by 3.06% to $2.28. Conversely, several stocks suffered notable losses. ZK and CZR both fell by 5.61% to $14.48 and $33.66, respectively. SNOW dropped to $113.10, losing 5.59%; TALO decreased by 5.63% to $10.06; and S declined by 5.68% to $19.91. The community has been a goldmine with some of the most refined voices in the space sharing their work, thoughts, and the new way of doing things. One of my recent takeaways from the team was how Modern Data 101's substack gets referenced by multiple Atlassian boards of different data companies. This is good validation for this boiling pot of ideas and data stories from across people, technologies, and solutions. Huge appreciation for the co-contributors and co-drivers of this community. Among all things going on, coming forward to share our stories is not always easy. Prioritising the word and valuing the exchange of deep-rooted stories as much as production. Status Update: Day 4 post launching my first plugin -> https://lnkd.in/gzavp6kQ Email email email. My transactional emails have been going to spam so I spent today learning how email works, running spam testers and trying to fix all of the things. Here's what I was doing wrong: - the host for my MX & spf records was incorrect - I wasn't including any plain text in my emails - no-reply is spammy - I didn't have a list unsubscribe header - I didn't have dmarc set up Now, my emails are still going to spam.. BUT, the message has gone from "This is a dangerous scary terrible email! Never open it!!" to "We've seen emails from this sender before and marked them as spam.. so this is probably spam". AND, I went from a 5.3 to 10 in this site -> https://lnkd.in/gEAUhZKE. Progress 💁‍♂️ Email is complicated. After today I am tempted to screw the whole email thing and slap a download button on the plugin page. 🤷‍♂️ Do you have any thoughts on this topic? Let me know! Thanks for your time.

Jay Graber, the CEO at Bluesky, has published a useful thread with links to explainers on how to use the platform, their current jobs board, how to set your own algorithm (!) and to their API docs for developers. https://lnkd.in/gqGw8rd3 NB I'm not about to be a flak for this or any other platform and wish there was more information about how Bluesky is funded and what happens to user data; it's an underreported story that I'd be interested to learn more about.

After 11 years of running a software engineering company, particularly collaborating with clients who had their own engineering teams, I realized that clearly defining how you add value and how the client perceives that value is crucial—especially when that value drives the growth of both companies. In March 2013, we began working with an Australian client that had its own internal engineering team, which we needed to collaborate with. At the time, we were two years into our operations—young, Black, fresh university graduates given a big opportunity. Since then, we've worked with large telecom companies, banks, startups, and Fortune 100+ companies. At this stage of our business, doing things just for the sake of revenue without delivering clear value no longer works. For example, one way we add value is by being equally invested in the client's product because we see a commercially viable opportunity for both of us. Another example is helping to significantly reduce the client's overall capital expenditure. We've put together a list of strategies that can assist engineering teams from different firms. Since John Allsopp mentioned the View Transitions API at Web Directions Code 2023 in Melbourne, I've been closely tracking its progress. Experimenting with it in Angular Spotify has been a joy. While my PR is still a work in progress for a single-page app like Angular Spotify (https://lnkd.in/gY6zQnBi)), it's exciting to see the View Transitions API advancing to a W3C Candidate Recommendation. Moreover, it now supports multi-page apps (MPAs), with the draft for cross-document navigation currently in public working draft status. This breakthrough means transitioning between pages in traditional multi-page apps, including those built with server-side rendering frameworks like ASP.NET MVC, PHP, Ruby, or static site generators such as Jekyll or Hugo, feels incredible with just @view-transition and view-transition-name in CSS!
