Clarity Grid Solutions #energystorage earnings in ERCOT for the first week of April 2024 remained stable compared March 2024. However, unlike the previous weeks where ancillary services awards were the dominant source of revenue, Real Time market earnings were a narrow majority of revenue for batteries. This is likely due to low ancillary service prices across the state, combined with some local spikes in Real Time energy pricing.

Scott Strazik from GE Vernova said on Akshat Rathi's podcast Zero that he anticipates an increase in demand for natural gas as an "enabler for more wind and solar." While he has a point—we need a flexible fuel source to bridge the gap between peak electricity demand and periods of low wind and solar generation—natural gas remains a significant source of emissions and its extraction takes a heavy toll on the environment. Cost-effective long-duration energy storage (LDES) solutions, such as pumped hydro energy storage (PHES), are emerging as vital opportunities for various grid services like Grid inertia, reactive power regulation and frequency regulation for grid & voltage stability. Across all energy mix scenarios, PHES will play an increasingly significant role in power systems. Energy time-shifting, capacity services, round the clock variable renewable energy (VRE) and fixed duration RE will be the largest sources of value for energy storage, both in the near and long term. Valuing energy storage for grid services, new PHES capacity is cost-effective over its lifecycle and in the near term. PHES can provide a majority of the operating reserve requirements and support the system by offering balancing, ramping up/down, and renewable energy (RE) integration services. Regulators and policymakers should create a level playing field for RE+storage and coal, focusing on building the least-cost resource options that maximize system reliability while minimizing costs to consumers. Pumped storage plants, such as BSES, are capacity-only resources. They provide firm capacity when needed but do not supply energy. In fact, due to round-trip efficiency losses, they are net energy consumers. Therefore, the best way to compare capacity-only resources is based on their capacity cost, measured in ₹/MW-Year. 1.The cost of the gas generation calculated in the article below probably is $3-4/Mmbtu. 2.This is true for the US only. 3. Currently 60% Europe is dependent on imported US LNG costing $20+/Mmbtu after stopping cheap Russian piped gas. 4. China is dependent on imported LNG, hence it will continue its renewable energy march irrespective of what Trump says. 5. Europe is in a dilemma. As wind and solar projects cost double or more to install in Europe compared to China, Australia and India.
