There is a lot of interest in silicon anode for EV batteries. Here is a short one pager for those interested. Today, the key focus of EV OEMs are the silicon technologies that (1) can reduce the cost of EV batteries to enable more affordable EVs with longer range; (2) can scale-up to large quantities required to support large volume EV battery production in existing factories with current EV-qualified suppliers; and (3) can reduce execution risks, ranging from process risks in coating electrodes to safety and to IP risks. To my knowledge, the SINANODE technology from OneD Battery Sciences is the only silicon technology today that meets all three of the above criteria. As we come to the end of 2024, I am very grateful for our R&D team in Palo Alto CA to have proven this with the building and testing of several hundred EV cell prototypes (with the help of cell partners and EV customers). I am also very grateful for our Pilot team to have completed in 2024 the SINANODE Pilot Plant in Moses Lake WA, and be ready to support customers with many tons per month of silicon-graphite anode materials in 2025 for the EV cell qualification process. #EVbattery #silicon #sinanode

Each type has its own advantages in terms of energy density, cycle life, and safety. 🔹 Charging Circuit Needs: The charging circuit must be designed to match the battery type. This includes selecting appropriate charging algorithms and ensuring the circuit can handle the required charging current and voltage. 🔸 Maximum Current Drawn: Understanding the peak and average current requirements of your device is essential. This helps in selecting a battery that can deliver the necessary current without degrading performance or lifespan. 🔹 Size of the Battery: The physical size of the battery must fit within the design constraints of the device. This often involves a trade-off between battery capacity and the available space. 🔸 Power Management: Efficient power management is key to extending battery life. This includes implementing low-power modes, optimizing power consumption, and using power management ICs to regulate voltage and current. 🔹 Effects of Radio Frequency (RF): RF emissions can interfere with battery performance and vice versa. Proper shielding and layout techniques are necessary to minimize these effects and ensure reliable operation. 🔸 Temperature of the Battery: Batteries are sensitive to temperature variations. High temperatures can accelerate degradation, while low temperatures can reduce performance. Thermal management solutions are essential to maintain optimal battery temperature. 🔹 Operation Time: The expected operation time between charges is a critical factor. This depends on the battery capacity and the power consumption of the device. Accurate estimation of operation time helps in selecting the right battery and designing efficient power management systems. The fast acceptance of electric cars (EVs) has focused attention, especially on #battery #safety and #economy. Reaching the range and dependability required by the EV industry depends on efficient #batterymanagementsystems (#BMS). As EV technology develops, conventional hardware testing techniques are sometimes unable to satisfy the high levels of dependability and performance needed. Here is where modeling and simulation find use. Before they are physically created, tools like Simulink and Simscape from MathWorks give engineers strong platforms to replicate, improve, and test BMS systems, hence greatly lowering risk and development time. The total market for Power Converters will exceed $164 BILLION by 2029 💡 As the #electricvehicle (#EV) market continues growing (followed by DC charging infrastructure), the need for #greenenergy sources becomes more critical to sustain the environmental benefits of #EVs. This drives the demand for #photovoltaic (PV) and #battery energy storage systems (BESS) to help balance the grid. The increasing synergy between these segments (EVs, DC charging, BESS, and PV) is boosting the demand for power converters. These four segments are projected to account for more than half of the total market, which is expected to reach $164.1 billion by 2029. Global battery market crisis: Will SECI benefit as oversupply sparks industry chaos? The global battery glut is likely to influence the price discovery of Solar Energy Corp. of India’s tender for 2 GW solar with 1 GW/4 GWh energy storage system, writes Ali Imran Naqvi, executive director (ED), Gensol Engineering Ltd. AUGUST 6, 2024 PV MAGAZINE A stark example of this crisis is the dramatic decline in battery cell manufacturing margins in China, which plummeted to an estimated 18% in March from an average of 46% throughout 2023. This sharp drop is attributed to an oversupply of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, with prices remaining stubbornly higher than production costs. The global capacity for battery production, now a staggering 4.2 terawatt-hours (TWh), far exceeds the anticipated global battery demand of 1.2 TWh for both EVs and energy storage in 2024. This surplus has led manufacturers to lower prices, selling at reduced margins to avoid inventory build-up, a move that many fear could lead to industry-wide bankruptcies within the next two years, based on a belief that lower prices cannot spur enough demand to absorb this oversupply. What’s more, this overcapacity is likely to haunt the industry throughout this decade, if most announced factories come online as planned.

This article summarizes very well the economic and technical drivers of the OEMs' EV battery road maps. The basic facts are simple: EV demand requires less expensive EVs with more range and charging faster, but today's EV battery costs are too high. Hence, China's LFP batteries, which are less expensive but have lower energy density than NMC batteries, have gained market share. OneD is in a very unique position because it is the only silicon anode technology for EV anodes that can decrease the cost gap between LFP and NMC batteries and increase the performance advantage of NMC batteries. #evbatteries
