💰 Women-Led VC Funds: Navigating 2024 Fundraising Landscape 💰 According to Venture Capital Journal, despite a strong start, women-led VC funds are feeling the impact of the industry-wide fundraising slowdown. As of November 30, 2024, women-led VC funds have raised $2.54 billion, which represents a 25% decrease from 2023's total of $3.43 billion. In comparison, global venture fundraising is down 13% YoY. One of the things we see quite often at Grit Capital Partners, is a newly minted CEO. We see a big difference in the transition to CEO based upon the historical lane the CEO is coming from. There are different new muscles if you are coming from Product, Engineering, Finance, etc. In this article, we go deep on the CRO to CEO transition, which includes some thoughts from Rosie O'Meara, a particularly fine example of someone who has made the transition quite well. *shakes off imposter syndrome* I was honored to be part of this VC roundtable discussion with some of the most brilliant minds in Utah. Here are a few of my favorite takeaways from the conversation: 1) Blake Modersitzki said, "One of my partners used to say that if you can’t explain the business on the back of your business card, it’s too complicated. VCs have a very short attention span." 👉🏻 Distilling a business's edge to catch the attention of investors, customers, and partners couldn't be more important, especially in a dry fundraising environment. 2) Davis Warnock said, "One of the biggest bummers for me is when the things I wrote in my notes in a face-to-face conversation don’t align with the data in the data room.  I don’t know what’s true, which lengthens the due diligence process." 👉🏻 Founders should focus on creating a consistent story supported by data. Words become opinions or lies if they are not supported by data. 3) John Mayfield said, "One lesson I’ve learned is that you’re playing over a decade, not on a single deal. Do what’s right for the entrepreneur, not just the VC, because this is a human business. When there are too many people, I think it is good for someone to step up and step away." 👉🏻 Social capital is the hardest type of capital to earn, but is easily lost. Business is personal. In a recent article published by InBusinessPHX, I share my perspective on venture capital fundraising. Here are a few takeaways: - Founders need to be smart with valuation, as their last round won’t necessarily dictate a valuation increase — even if they hit milestones... Find smart capital at a fair value and focus on execution. - Defining the market is extremely important. Don't overstate the true market that's being addressed. - Once terms are accepted and is capital deployed, the most important element in a great founder/VC relationship is communication. Many founders are worried that this new level of accountability will stifle growth. Lexington Books managed to release my book Disagreeing despite the Data before the election. It argues the belief segregation underway in the US may be irreversible. Today's battles over climate change, disease mitigation, and election results run deep -- they're cognitive, not just strategic. Here's the gist of it. 20th-century revolutions in the philosophy of mind, meaning, and matter uncover three surprising requirements for widespread factual agreement. Critical thinking and community building have the potential to reverse two of them -- the growing refusal to test assumptions and individual isolation. Factual agreement between groups is impossible without the third one, though -- shared projects or other meaningful interaction. And a large part of American society has insulated itself from the rest. Without shared projects, communities gradually lose the ability to tell whether they agree or not regardless of the words they use. Belief segregation with similar roots has led several developing countries to the brink of failure. We'd better watch out. "Hey Jeff, I saw your post about chief strategy officers a while back and I wanted to ask what the difference was between the CSO and an Advisor? Aren't they the same thing?" The CSO role hasn't been around that long, that I know of, as I just heard about it a few years ago. I guess the main differences are compensation and accountability. The CSO is a hired role with paycheck and potentially equity/options. They have to perform to keep their job as they can be fired at any time. The job is typically open ended and long term. An Advisor is not a volunteer position, but they typically don't get comp other than equity grants vested over a few years and they are not held accountable as they don't make the decisions, they just advise AKA give the founders the pros and cons of a scenario or choice. The Advisor role is short term, typically on a 12-24 month contract and the contract can be dissolved upon mutual agreement or sometimes with just some notice in writing like 14-30 days. I guess the biggest difference is that the Advisor is passive and hands off and maybe only tapped once a month as the CSO is extremely hands on and in the weeds on a day to day basis.
