A North American retailer trialing Auror's License Plate Recognition (LPR) recently discovered 22% of Vehicles of Interest were linked to repeat offenders with known threatening behavior. They also found repeat offenders were 4X more likely to show threatening behavior. As someone who has processed body worn, in car, and static camera images for law enforcement and courtroom purposes, I can tell you it is not how many cameras you have, the number of images you have from assorted devices or angles, but it is the quality of those images that matters. Invest your money in quality camera systems placed in the proper locations. I have been preaching this for 15 years and it seems like few people are listening. It is pixels on target folks, this is what is needed. And always remember, you can have the best images in the world, but if your local criminal justice system fails to prosecute and hold criminals accountable for their actions, no financial investment in security systems will be of criminal legal value. Conversely, if you don’t have the quality systems in place you open yourself up to civil liability because of your duty of care. Almost all of the camera manufacturers these days produce quality images, but the problem is in the design and installation. that is facility specific. You need 50 to 100 pixels for facial recognition depending on lighting, distance, etc. I’m not talking about AI facial recognition, I’m talking about visual facial identification of a subject. Buy better cameras, place them in better locations, and require the prosecutors in your community to do their jobs. My 2 cents.
